Fejiro Okiomah (Austin, Texas/Hendrickson-Pflugerville) each scored a goal to lead the High Point University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Richmond in the first game of the JMU Comfort Inn Invitational Friday evening in Harrisonburg, Va.
Karo Okiomah scored the game's first tally in the first half and
Fejiro Okiomah knocked home the game-winner in the second half as the Panthers improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
"We are excited to get a win over a quality and well coached program like Richmond," said head coach
Dustin Fonder. "I thought Karo (Okiomah) and Fejiro (Okiomah) were a handful up top for our opponents and it was fitting that they scored both of our goals. Even though we are pleased with the victory we still have a lot to learn as a young group. For instance we need to close out games better."
High Point came out on the attack from the opening whistle, forcing Brock Tomlinson, the Richmond goalie, to make three saves in the first ten minutes of play.
The Panther's broke through in the 27th minute when senior
Matt Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds) whipped a hard cross into the box from the right wing and
Karo Okiomah managed to redirect it with a header for the first score of the match. The goal was the sophomore's second in as many games.
After the Spiders tied the game in the 47th minute,
Fejiro Okiomah scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute off a beautiful pass from his brother
Karo Okiomah.
Fejiro Okiomah made a well-timed diagonal run and
Karo Okiomah found him in space with a through ball past two defenders for a one-on-one chance against the goalie.
Fejiro Okiomah finished with a one-timer past the goalie to the far corner.
High Point returns to action at the JMU Comfort Inn Invitational on Sunday at 12 p.m. when the team takes on Rider. The Broncs fell to host James Madison by a score of 3-0.
