The High Point University volleyball team dropped the first set to UNC Wilmington but came from behind to top the Seahawks 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-14). The Panthers finished 3-1 in the North Carolina Central Tournament. HPU was again paced by junior transfer
Megan Smith, who had a match-high in kills, 15 and digs, 15. Smith was also named to the All-Tournament team. Junior middle blocker
Stephanie Wallin added 11 kills and three service aces.
"It felt good to be with a team again and feel the chemistry," said Smith. "As the weekend progressed we got stronger and stronger and as long as we keep practicing we will continue to improve. We were getting beat by the Wilmington block but we were able to come back by controlling and moving the ball and creating holes in the block."
High Point dropped the first game 25-20 despite four kills from Smith. The Seahawks outhit the Panthers .194 to .116 and capitalized on four HPU service errors to win the set.
Freshman outside hitter
Courtney Johnk came off the bench in the second set with four kills to help the Panthers to a 25-18 win. The Panthers hit .406 in the second set and were tougher from the service line with three aces to win the set and tie the match at 1-1.
High Point took an early 14-10 lead but the Seahawks battled back to a 16-14 lead. The Panthers' attackers struggled to get the ball over the Wilmington blockers. Sophomore setter
Holly Fong stopped the UNC Wilmington run with a tip over for a kill. Smith was able to get around the block and the Panthers took back the lead at 21-19 with a pair kills from Smith and a block from junior middle blocker
Anna Lott and Wallin. The teams traded points to a tie at 25 with Johnk at the service line. A Wilmington attack error gave HPU the 25-24 advantage and Fong had another tip over for the kill and the 27-25 win.
The Panthers carried the momentum in to game four, taking a quick 7-1 lead. The Seahawks kept battling but HPU was able to beat the Wilmington block and stay strong from the service line, winning the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
The 3-1 Panthers head to Buies Creek, N.C. on Tuesday to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels at 7 p.m. Campbell is 3-0 on the season with wins over Davidson, Morgan State and North Carolina State.
