Box Score Brett Stackhouse tossed a complete game giving up three runs on seven hits in leading Gardner-Webb to a 10-3 win over High Point in a key Big South match-up Saturday afternoon at Masters Field.
High Point got on the board first scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Max Fulginiti laced a fastball into left-centerfield. He was sacrificed over to second base but an errant throw allowed Drew Geissinger to reach. Eric Marion put down a great bunt for a base hit and another wild throw sailed past the covering first baseman allowing Fulginiti to score. On the same play, Marion took off for second and the throw to second base got away bringing in Geissinger for the second run.
Gardner-Webb quickly responded scoring the game's next four runs including three in the bottom half of the inning. After two quick outs were recorded, Aaron Miller tripled down the rightfield line. Three straight doubles capped off by Tyler Johnson gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the lead. They tacked on another run in the bottom of the third when Daniel Cooke took the first pitch he saw over the left-centerfield wall.
The Panthers would respond in the top of the fourth when Geissinger ripped a one-out double passed the diving third baseman. After another groundout, Spencer Andrews singled through the right side plating Geissinger, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
GW would go on to score the final six runs of the ballgame. In the sixth inning, Matt Rizzuto and Kurt Fulginiti both hit solo homeruns in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
A one-out and two-out walk in the eighth inning brought up Justin Lloyd who hit the final homerun of the contest to left-centerfield giving the hosts a 9-3 lead. Ty Boyles doubled to leftfield and K. Fulginiti capped off the scoring with a flaring single to centerfield.
Marion was the only Panther to pick-up multiple hits on the day going 2-for-4 at the plate. Geissinger scored a pair of runs and Andrews had the only RBI. Bill Manion extended his hitting streak to 15 games and Billy Alvino was hit twice, adding to his Big South record. Jamie Serber suffered the losing dropping his mark to 4-4 on the year. He work 5.2 innings giving up five runs on 12 hits while registering four strikeouts.
Six different Bulldogs had multi-hit performances led by Brock Miller who had three on the afternoon. Lloyd drove in three while Fulginiti and Rizzuto both knocked in a pair. Stackhouse improved to 5-4 on the year with the win.
The two sides will play the series finale tomorrow May 10 at Masters Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
