HPU beats VMI, 3-2

Box Score

A great pitching performance from Jamie Serber and a game-winning hit by Pablo Rosario lifted High Point to a 3-2 win over VMI in the second game of the series Friday night at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Jeff Cowan reached on a throwing error that skipped past the first baseman allowing him to move up to second base.  Alfie Wheeler laced a ball tailing away from the centerfielder, but it was caught for an out.  Bill Manion then singled up the middling plating Cowan for a 1-0 HPU lead after one.  The Panthers tacked on another run in the third inning when Cowan hit his first homerun of the season on a 0-1 count.

VMI responded in the bottom half of the inning which began with an A.J. Yoder double to right-centerfield.  He advanced to third on a flyout to rightfield and scored on a RBI groundout by Jordan Ballard.

HPU threatened to add to their lead in the fifth inning.  Wheeler led off with a single through the right ride and after a flyout, Billy Alvino executed a hit-and-run play putting runners on the corners.  A foul out to the third baseman and a groundout to shortstop ended the inning before any more runs could be added.

Justin Topping singled through the left side to start off the bottom of the eighth inning for the Keydets.  Jacob Morely then struckout trying to sacrifice bunt with two strikes as the ball went foul.  Jeremy Berg then came on in relief of starter Serber and got Yoder to flyout to right-centerfield.  With the runner running on a 3-2 pitch, Tanner Biagini doubled down the rightfield line plating Topping all the way from first.

Pinch-hitter Hank Patterson singled up the middle to start off the inning.  He was sacrificed over to second base by Eric Marion.  Rosario singled to right-centerfield plating Patterson.  Cowan singled again putting runners on first and second.  A strikeout-caught stealing double play ended the inning before they could tack anything else on the board.

Berg recorded a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fourth win of the season.  Cowan, Wheeler and Kyle Mahoney each had a pair of hits for HPU on the night while Manion extended his hitting streak to 20-games.  Wheeler moved into fourth all-time on the HPU career hit list with 229 and a tie for fourth in the single-season list with 76.  Alvino moved into sole possession of second place for the most hits in a single-season with 80.  Serber worked 7.1 innings allowing just two runs on four hits.  He walked one batter and struckout three.

The regular season finale for both squads will be played tomorrow Saturday May 16 at Gray-Minor Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
