High Point drops series opener with VMI, 13-2

Box Score

VMI took the opening game of the series 13-2 in a game started Friday night and was continued Saturday night due to heavy rain and lightning that suspended the game.

VMI raced out to an early start and never looked back as they scored the first ten runs of the game.  A.J. Yoder singled through the right side to start off the bottom half of the first inning and was sacrificed over to second base.  After a flyout, back-to-back walks loaded the bases.  On a 1-2 pitch, Graham Sullivan hit one up the middle driving two runs, putting runners on first and second.  Another walk loaded the bases once again and the second two-run single came off the bat of Justin Topping, giving the Keydets a 4-0 lead after one inning.

The first two runners got on for VMI in the second and were moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.  Sam Roberts then hit a three-run homerun to right-centerfield for a 7-0 lead.  Three solo homeruns accounted for all three runs in the fourth inning as Roberts hit his second of the game followed by Graham Sullivan and Brian Sandridge hitting back-to-back homeruns.

High Point finally struck in the sixth inning which began with an Eric Marion single to leftfield.  After a strikeout, Spencer Atwood singled through the left side putting runners on first and second.  Alfie Wheeler then singled to rightfield scoring Marion on the play.  A double play in the next at-bat ended the inning.

VMI tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo homerun from Jordan Ballard and a two-run homerun from Alex Haitsuka.

HPU loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning.  Kyle Mahoney hit a sacrifice fly scoring Drew Geissinger before Murray White lined into a double-play to end the game.

Marion was the only player to pick up multiple hits on the night with two, while seven different players picked up a hit.  Bill Manion extended his hitting streak to 19-games.  RJ Chlebnikow suffered the loss dropping his record to 3-5 on the year.

Game two of the series is scheduled to begin in approximately 25 minutes.
