Box Score High Point scored in four innings including the bottom of the ninth and got a solid pitching performance to extend their winning streak to five games with a 4-3 victory over North Carolina A&T Wednesday night at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.
High Point (12-16) scored the first three runs of the contest, including a run in the first and second inning. Pablo Rosario began the game by being hit by a pitch and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alfie Wheeler. A wild pitch allowed him to reach third and he scored on a groundout by Bill Manion. It was Manion's team leading 24th run driven in. Lead off doubles by Max Fulginiti and Murray White IV in the second inning gave HPU a 2-0 lead.
They tacked on another run in fifth inning. Wheeler drew a one-out walk and sold second base. Billy Alvino doubled off the leftfield wall driving in Wheeler for a 3-0 advantage. Alvino got to third on a wild pitch, but a fly out ended the inning.
North Carolina A&T (7-22) answered back with the next three runs in the contest. After two quick outs were record by Al Yevoli, the southpaw allowed back-to-back doubles from C.J. Beatty and Nick Rogers plating their first run.
A pair of singles began the seventh for the Aggies and the runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Yevoli struck out the next batter, but gave up a two-run single to Eric Chiz. Corey Swickle would come on in relief to record the final out of the inning.
Alvino started a two-out rally attempt with a double down the leftfield line, his second of the game. Kyle Mahoney beat out an infield single, putting runners on the corners. Unfortunately a strikeout would end the inning in the seventh.
Manion singled to leftfield with one out in the ninth followed by another single to right-centerfield by Alvino, moving Manion to third. Mahoney was hit by a pitch loading the bases Fulginiti. He beat out a potential double-play ball allowing Manion to cross the plate for the winning run.
Swickle improved to his record to 1-1 on the season tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. Yevoli worked 6.1 innings in his first career start. Alvino paced the offense reach safely in all five plate appearances picking up three hits, a walk and being hit by a pitch. Alvino now has a seven game hitting streak, including six multi-hit games in that stretch and 17 total multi-hit affairs on the season. Fulginiti and White picked up a pair of hits as well. Fulginiti extended his team high hitting streak to 18 games, while Wheeler's was snapped at 11-games.
Blaine McCraw suffered the loss working 0.2 innings allowing one run on two hits. Starter Nick Oelker worked into the seventh throwing 6.2 innings giving up three runs on six hits and five walks. Rogers and Chris Mullins had two hits each for the Aggies.
High Point will host Charleston Southern this weekend beginning Friday, April 10th in a Big South conference three-game set at Williard Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series by playing a double-header on Saturday, April 11th starting at 1:00 pm.
