Billy Alvino Powers High Point to 9-6 Victory over Campbell

Box Score

High Point pounded out 16 hits on the night and had four two-run innings en route to a 9-6 win over Campbell in a non-conference match-up at Taylor Field.

Campbell got on the board first picking up a run in the first inning.  Chris Bangi worked back from a 0-2 to draw a walk and stole second and third base.  He scored on an Ellis Lowe groundout to Alfie Wheeler.

High Point responded right back in the top of the second inning.  Max Fulginiti extended his hitting streak to 17-games with a one-out single through the leftside.  Eric Marion executed a hit-and-run singling through the vacated second baseman position moving Fulginiti up to third.  Back-to-back singles from Pablo Rosario and Spencer Andrews plated both Fulginiti and Marion for a 2-1 lead.

After the Fighting Camels came back to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a Bangi RBI single, HPU took the lead again over the hosts.  Wheeler singled extending his hitting streak to 11-games but was forced out at second on a Bill Manion fielder's choice.  Billy Alvino drove a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield wall for his first homerun of the season giving High Point a 4-2 advantage.

Carlton Lloyd doubled to centerfield leading off the fourth inning for Campbell and then moved up to third base on a groundout.  DJ Johnson drove him in on a sacrifice fly to rightfield.

HPU again countered CU's run by posting two more runs in the fifth inning.  Wheeler singled up the middle and reached second when Manion was hit by a pitch.  Alvino singled to rightfield allowing Wheeler to score on the play and Manion to get to third base.  Manion scored on a fielding error putting runners at first and second.

Another sacrifice fly by Campbell brought them to within two runs at 6-4 before High Point responded with its fourth two-run inning.  Eric Marion singled to begin the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After a strikeout, Cowan doubled to centerfield plating Marion.  Murray White IV came in to run for Cowan, moved up to third on a Wheeler single and Manion drove him in with another single.  That gave High Point a 8-4 lead through 6 ½ innings of play.

Walks to the first two hitters for Campbell chased HPU starter Brian Jones from the game and brought on reliever Jeremy Berg.  Berg struck out the first batter, gave up a single to centerfield plating one run, then got a groundout and fly out to end the jam.

Kyle Mahoney doubled off the left-centerfield wall for the Panthers in the top of the seventh inning.  Fulginiti reached on another fielding error by the shortstop. Two straight walks forced in Mahoney for a 9-5 HPU lead.

A double and two singles cut the High Point lead to 9-6 after eight innings of play.  DJ Johnson flipped his bat at a 1-2 pitch and lofted the ball into shallow leftfield scoring Floyd.  Berg got the next three hitters out in order without allowing another run in the frame.

In the bottom of the ninth, Berg gave up a walk and double to begin the inning setting up a second and third situation.  He settled in and struck out the next two hitters and got the final out on a pop out to the first baseman.

Alvino and Wheeler led the offense with three hits each.  Manion, Marion and Fulginiti each had two hits as well.  Jones picked up his first win of the season working 5.0+ innings surrendering five runs on four hits and seven walks.  Berg closed out the contest working the final four innings allowing just one run.

High Point will be back in action tomorrow night April 8th when it hosts NC A&T at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
