Box Score High Point scored all seven of its runs in the first four innings and held on to defeat Presbyterian in the second game of the three-game set at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium. The win secured HPU winning the series, the second consecutive they have taken from a Big South foe.
Both teams opened the game scoring multiple runs with Presbyterian posting two runs and HPU putting four on the board for a 4-2 lead after one inning. Jared Combs executed a hit-and-run scoring Andrew Williams and Kenny Bryant's sacrifice fly plated Cory Lyda for a 2-0 PC lead after a half inning of play.
High Point quickly responded in their half of the opening frame to take the lead, one which they would hold on to for the remainder of the contest. Billy Alvino, Kyle Mahoney and Sal Pezzino drove in the runs for the Panthers with Pezzino notching a two-run single.
The two sides countered each other in the next couple of innings with PC putting a run on the board in the third, fourth and fifth inning. Lyda singled with two outs and stole second in the third. He scored on a Combs single up the middle in the third. Nate Horton reached on a fielding error in the fourth inning which was followed up by a RBI double from Zac Rhinesmith. The fifth run for PC also came due to an error by the Panthers. Mack Hite reached on a dropped fly ball, advancing on the play to second base. After moving up on a fielder's choice, Combs hit the first of his two sacrifice flies for his third RBI of the game.
The Panthers scored two runs in the third and another in the fourth to keep their lead, 7-5 after five innings. Alvino began the third with a single followed by a double from Mahoney although Alvino was tug out at third on the hit. Max Fulginiti plated Mahoney in the next at-bat with a single that extended his hitting streak to 15-games. He advanced to second base on the throw trying to get Mahoney at home plate. After a groundout moved Fulginiti to third, the designated hitter was able to cross home on a wild pitch. The final run of the contest for the Panthers came on another wild pitch that allowed Jeff Cowan to score.
HPU limited Presbyterian to one run over the final four innings and the bullpen allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings of work. In the seventh, PC got its last run on Comb's second sacrifice fly of the contest, plating Hite who had been hit by a pitch to open the frame.
Alvino racked up three hits while Pezzino and Mahoney each had a pair of hits. Fulginiti tied the HPU season-high hitting streak of 15, which was held by Mahoney. Alfie Wheeler's hitting streak reached nine games. Jamie Serber upped his mark to 2-2 on the season working 5.1 innings allowing five runs (three earned). Corey Swickle tossed 2.2 innings of one-run ball and Jeremy Berg picked up his second save of the series working a scoreless ninth inning.
Comb's provided the big punch offensively for the Blue Hose driving in four runs and going 2-for-3 at the plate. Lyda also had two hits while Rhinesmith finished with a team-best three hits in the contest. Jesse Harmon suffered the loss surrendering seven runs in 6.2 innings of work. He gave up 10 hits and issued four walks.
The two sides will play the series finale Sunday at Williard Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
