Box Score Corey Overholtzer tripled off the wall in the 12th inning knocking in two runs to lift UNC Greensboro to a 9-7 victory over High Point Wednesday night at Williard Stadium.
UNC Greensboro (16-23) got on the board early scoring a pair of runs in the first inning and five through the first four to take a 5-0 lead after four complete innings of play. Brent O'Berry singled up the middle to start things off and a walk to Corey Overholtzer walked. After a strikeout, a potential double-play ball hit the umpire for a base hit, loading the bases. O'Berry scored on a wild pitcher and Overholtzer scored on a groundout. The Spartans added one in the third on a double-play groundout and capped off the early scoring spurt with a two-run single off the bat of O'Berry in the fourth inning.
High Point (17-25) responded back in the fifth inning cutting the lead to 5-4. A leadoff walk to Eric Marion followed by a single up the middle by Pablo Rosario started off the inning. Jeff Cowan grounded into an awkward double play where the shortstop kicked the ball to the second baseman for a 6-4-3 double-play forcing out Rosario. Alfie Wheeler walked to put runners on the corners. Bill Manion laced a single to centerfield plating Marion and again placing runners on first and third. Billy Alvino hit a blast over the left-centerfield wall bringing the Panthers within one.
Raymond Frias started off the sixth inning for the Spartans with a single to rightfield. After a groundout, Brent O'Berry reached on a fielding error which allowed Frias to score and tack on another run, making it 6-4 UNCG.
Spencer Andrews started another HPU rally with a one-out single to shortstop. Eric Marion then went yard to rightfield tying the game at six all. After a pitching change, Rosario doubled down the rightfield line. He advanced to third on a groundout by Cowan. Wheeler smacked a ball up the middle giving the Panthers a 7-6 edge after six innings.
Leading off the eighth inning, Richards hit a homerun on the first pitch of the inning tying the game 7-7.
After HPU went down in the bottom half of the inning, Pedro Leon was hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Rob Gilliam hit a comebacker to Jeremy Berg and the closer caught Leon to far off of second and Cowan tagged him out on the rundown. Gilliam did reach on the play. A groundout ended their half of the ninth inning
Manion started the bottom of the inning with a sharp single to centerfield. A pop out ensued before Mahoney struckout swinging on a pitch that got away from the catcher. Manion took second and advanced to third on the throw that sailed into centerfield. Max Fulginiti flied out to deep rightfield for the final out of the inning.
After a couple of scoreless innings UNCG struck in 12th inning with a pair of runs. Joey Frabasile singled in the leftside hole to start it off. Frias fouled off a ball on a bunt attempt with two strikes to record the first out, followed by a walk putting runners at first and second. A ball hit back to Berg enabled him to force out Frabasile at third. Overholtzer then delivered the big blow hitting a triple to right-centerfield plating both runners.
Alvino was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom half of the inning, but the next three batters went down in order to end the game. The hit by pitch for Alvino ties him for the Big South's all-time hit by pitches in a career with 55. The backstop also holds the HPU all-time record.
Four different Panthers recorded two hits on the night led by Alvino's 2-for-5, 3 runs batted in performance. Fulginiti tied the Big South Conference hitting streak mark by hitting safely in 32 consecutive games. Manion upped his hitting streak to 13 games as well. Berg suffered the loss going to 3-2 on the season working four innings while surrendering two runs on four hits. He walked a batter and struckout four.
High Point enjoys a nice layoff due to upcoming finals and will return to action next Friday, May 8, when it travels to Boiling Springs to take on Gardner-Webb in a pivotal Big South match-up. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
