HPU Loses Late Lead, Drops 8-5 Contest to UNC Asheville

Box Score

UNC Asheville scored seven runs, including five unearned in the final two innings to comeback and defeat High Point 8-5 in the series finale at Greenwood Field.  High Point won the series 2-1 by winning the first two contests of the set.

High Point (7-14, 3-7) got off to its usual fast start scoring all five of their runs in the third inning.  Eric Marion doubled down the rightfield line and moved to third on a bunt single by Spencer Andrews.  Back-to-back RBI singles by Pablo Rosario and Afie Wheeler plated Marion and Andrews.  Jeff Cowan then sacrificed the two runners up to second and third.  Bill Manion singled on a chopper to first base and advanced to second on the throwing error.  He was credited with one RBI although Rosario and Wheeler both scored.  Max Fulginiti continued his hot hitting driving in Manion for the Panthers final run of the contest.

The Panthers had an opportunity an inning later to tack onto their lead but a base running mistake cost them.  Marion reached on a field error by the third baseman.  Andrews then sacrificed him over to second base, but he was caught off second with a big turn for the second out of the inning.  Next up was Rosario who singled to left-centerfield which potentially could have scored Marion before a groundout ended the inning.

A fielding error ignited the Bulldogs (5-21, 3-7) rally in the seventh allowing Jordan Lurie to reach.  Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for UNCA.  A sacrifice fly and a RBI double cut into the deceit, making it a 5-3 High Point advantage.  Beau Zinman tied the game at five all on a single to rightfield.  Another single by Mike Vaughn and a walk to Reed Kreisser loaded the bases for the second time in the inning.  Reliever Zach Scott got the next hitter to popout to the first baseman before Lurie singled to centerfield bringing in the go-ahead runs.  The host's added an insurance run in the eighth inning Catlin Carter singled to start it off.  Kevin Weidenbacher reached when Scott threw to second base on his sacrifice bunt attempt and Carter was called safe.  The two runners advanced to second and third on a sac bunt by Justin Schumer.  Carter scored on a wild pitch over the head of the catcher.

HPU attempted their own rally in the ninth inning.  After two-outs were recorded, Rosario was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count and Wheeler walked on five pitches.  Cowan grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Rosario was the only Panther player with a multi-hit game, picking up three hits.  Kyle Mahoney and Fulginiti both extended their hitting streaks to 11 and 13 games, respectively.  Billy Alvino's hitting streak was snapped at eight games.  Jamie Serber started the contest, tossing 6.1 innings allowing five runs (three earned) in receiving a no-decision.  Corey Swickle suffered his first loss of the season after facing two batters, both of who scored but neither was an earned run.  Scott finished the contest throwing 1.2 innings and has yet to allow an earned run on the season in 13.1 innings of work.

Leading the offense for UNCA was Baaz and Carter, each with two hits.  Carter and Vaughn both scored a pair of runs as well.  Ryan Dull pitched a complete game giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two free passes.  Dull upped his record to 2-5 after suffering the loss in Game 2 of the series which was continued prior to the start of game three.

High Point is back in action tomorrow, March 31 when they host Campbell at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
