Box Score Tyler Bream went 3-for-4 including a three-run homerun and tied a school record with nine runs batted in, leading Liberty to a 19-5 victory over High Point Sunday afternoon at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.
The Flames scored multiple runs in the first four innings to take control of the contest early. In the first, the first two hitters of the game were hit by a pitch and moved up to second and third on a groundout. The first run came on a dropped ball by the HPU leftfielder before two RBI-singles brought in a pair of runs to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
High Point answered back in the bottom of the inning which began with a single, hit by pitch and single to load the bases. The Panthers got their first run when Kyle Mahoney grounded into a double-play and Alfie Wheeler advanced to third on the play. He would score on a wild pitch, bringing them within a run at 3-2.
LU took over the game in the next couple of innings posting three, four and five runs in the second, third, and fourth inning, respectively. Doug Bream, T. Bream and Errol Hollinger each drove in a run in the second. A three-run homerun by T. Bream and a solo blast by Hollinger accounted for the runs in the third inning.
In the bottom half of the third, Mahoney hit a one-out single through the right side, extending his hitting streak to 10-games. Max Fulginiti then walked and Billy Alvino drove in Mahoney on a single to centerfield. Fulginiti advanced to third on the play. Hank Patterson hit a line-drive to the Liberty centerfielder, good for a sacrifice fly plating Fulginiti.
In the fourth, T. Bream added three more RBI to his total, this time on a double to left-centerfield. Joseph Feeley brought in T. Bream on a single to centerfield and advanced to second on an error. Trey Wimmer singled in Feeley, capping off the scoring for the Flames and giving them a 15-4 advantage.
Wheeler started the sixth inning with a single to left-centerfield and advanced to second on a passed ball. Cowan then drew a walk, moving Wheeler up to second, but was forced out on another Mahoney double-play groundout. Wheeler advanced to third on the double-play and later scored on a Fulginiti single to leftfield.
The Flames closed out the scoring in the contest with four runs in the seventh inning. Three RBI-singles brought in the first three runs of the inning, and a throwing error allowed the fourth run of the inning to cross the plate.
Patterson and Eric Marion each had two hits on the afternoon for the Panthers. Nine different players registered a hit for the hosts as well. Brian Jones suffered the loss, dropping his record to 0-4. Zach Scott tossed 2.2 innings, allowing just one unearned run and has yet to give up an earned run this season in 9.1 innings.
Redal, T. Bream and Hollinger all had three hits apiece for Liberty. T. Bream drove in nine runs, while Hollinger (three) and D. Bream (two) were the other Flames with multiple RBI. Shawn Teufel improved to 2-1, working five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks.
