Box Score The High Point baseball team suffered its second straight loss to Liberty by a score of 7-3 Saturday night at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.
Liberty (14-5, 3-1) got on the board early posting a run in the top of the first after two quick outs were recorded. Doug Bream singled up the middle followed by an Errol Hollinger single in the hole to the shortstop. Tyler Bream singled through the right side giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
High Point (5-12, 1-5) quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage after one. Pablo Rosario started it off by getting hit by a pitch and Alfie Wheeler pushed a bunt past the pitcher to get the first two runners on. A Jeff Cowan double down the rightfield line in which Wheeler was running on the play allowed him to score easily all the way from first base. Rosario also scored on the play.
The Flames scored six unanswered runs to take command of the contest between the third and sixth innings. T. Bream got his second RBI single in the third, which was aided by a HPU error and the run was unearned. The High Point defense again helped LU tack on a pair of runs in the fourth. Matt Williams reached on a fielding error, which Zane Bator scored on. Williams proceeded to steal second and Kizuku Scott crossed home plate on the errant throw that sailed into centerfield. RBI singles by T. Bream and Curran Redal plated two more runs for Liberty. Their final run of the game came in the eighth inning, again assisted by an error. Scott reached on an error by the rightfielder and advanced to second as the ball caromed away. Redal drove in his second run of the game on a single to rightfield.
Billy Alvino hit a one-out triple in the ninth inning to start the Panther rally attempt. Spencer Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield allowing Alvino to score and making it a 7-3 ballgame. Unfortunately, the next hitter struck out swinging to end the game.
Wheeler and Max Fulginiti had a pair of hits on the evening for High Point while Kyle Mahoney extended his hitting streak to nine games. Seven different Panthers recorded a hit on the night as well. Jamie Serber drops his record to 1-2 on the season tossing six innings, giving up six runs (four earned). Nick Lettas was solid in relief throwing three innings surrendering one unearned run on two hits.
Six different Liberty players had multi-hit nights led by T. Bream who recorded three hits and runs batted in. Curran was the only other Flame with more than one RBI with two. Steven Evans hurled a complete game allowing three runs on nine hits and one free bass. He improves to 3-0 on the season.
The two schools will play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
