Box Score High Point freshman Nick Barbour made nearly everything on his way to a career high 32 points unfortunately his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer slipped out of the rim as Coastal Carolina escaped with a 70-68 victory in front of a packed Millis Athletic Center crowd (attendance 1,816) on Saturday night.
Barbour, who went 10-16 from the field including a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point line and also made all seven of his free throw attempts, had an open look for the win after CCU's Mario Sisinni dropped in a three-pointer with eight seconds left to give the Chanticleers the final lead.
Barbour became the first HPU player to score 30 or more points in a game since Arizona Reid totaled 34 points against Radford on Feb. 27, 2008. Barbour had 22 points in the first half and passed his previous career best performance just two minutes into the second half.
With the loss, High Point slips to 6-17 overall and 2-11 in Big South Conference play and are still seeking their first home win in league action. Coastal Carolina snapped a three-game losing skid and picked up their first road Big South victory to improve to 10-14 and 4-8.
In addition to Barbour's strong play, HPU's Cruz Daniels recorded his third double-double of the season finishing with 10 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Daniels also blocked five shots in the game and became on the fourth player in Big South Conference history to reach 200 career blocks. Freshman Steadman Short also had a solid game for the Panthers tallying eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots on the night.
Dexter Moore scored 23 points to lead the Chanticleer attack followed by 13 points from Joseph Harris and 10 by Logan Johnson and Steven Sexton. Harris also pulled down 10 rebounds to record his league-leading 13th double-double of the year.
Both teams got out of the gate quickly behind the hot-shooting of a pair of freshmen. Barbour led the charge for the Panthers scoring 11 of the team's first 13 points including three straight treys to open the game. Moore answered for the Chants connecting on his first four shots from long distance as Coastal made five of its first six three-point attempts to build a 20-13 lead with 13:17 left in the first half.
HPU fought back and eventually tied the score at 20 and then proceeded to trade baskets over the next several possessions. Trailing by one with 6:56 left in the first half, High Point scored eight straight points to earn a seven point advantage just two minutes later. The Panthers pushed their lead to eight points, 41-33, in the closing minutes before CCU got a pair of late layups to trim their halftime deficit to just four at 41-37.
The Panthers maintained a lead for most of the second half as the two squads battled through two ties and five lead changes. Coastal Carolina's largest and final lead of the game until their final shot was a three-point advantage, 58-55, with 9:57 remaining in the game. HPU twice led by four points in the final five minutes of play including 68-64 with 1:32 left on the clock following a rebound putback by Short.
Harris hit a jumper on Coastal's next trip down the floor to close the margin to two. After an HPU turnover, Johnson missed a pair of free throws with 19 seconds for CCU, but Jon Pack was fouled on the rebound. Pack left the game with an injured ankle and Sexton made one of two free throw attempts as his replacement.
Daniels was fouled getting the rebound of Sexton's miss but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw attempt setting up the final dramatic seconds.
High Point continues its current home stand on Wednesday when the Panthers welcome arch rival Winthrop for a 7 p.m. clash in the Millis Center.
