Mackenzie Maier (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) blocked five shots to break the High Point Division I career blocks record as the High Point women's basketball team beat Youngstown State 73-50 at the Phoenix Classic in Elon, N.C., Saturday night. The Panthers shutdown YSU, holding the Penguins to just 25 percent shooting.
"We played exactly like how we want to play basketball," said head coach Tooey Loy. "The whole difference between tonight and last night was we made our easy shots. Last night we played with great intensity and with good defense but we didn't make the easy ones. Tonight we just made our shots. This is the kind of basketball we want to play and this is a great thing to carry over into the rest of the season."
Maier's five blocks give her 136 for her career, two better than previous record holder Mary Brewer (1999-02) who blocked 134 shots in her career. The Charleston, W.Va., native was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Panthers in scoring for the second-straight night with 16 points.
"Mackenzie had a great weekend," said Loy. "She have us a great chance to win last night, with 12 second-half points and she carried that over to tonight. This is also what we expect from Mackenzie. We expect her to get 12-15 points a game and she led the conference in locked shots last year. She really played up to her level this weekend."
HPU shot out to a quick start, outscoring the Penguins 27-7 in the opening ten minutes. HPU shot 12-20 from the floor while limiting Youngstown to just two field goals on 2-14 shooting. Maier led the Panthers with seven points during the early run while junior
Jurica Hargraves (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and sophomore
Shamia Brown (Raeford, N.C./Hoke County) each contributed five.
YSU managed to stop the bleeding, but was unable to trim the Panther lead as the two teams entered halftime with High Point possessing a 42-23 lead. Maier shot 6-9 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arch to lead HPU with 14 points at the break.
In the second half, High Point continued to play suffocating defense, holding Youngstown State to 5-24 shooting while building its lead to as high as 58-31 with 12:42 remaining. The Panthers made 11-15 free throws down the stretch to seal their first win of the season.
Brown scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench while junior
Amy Dodd (Apex, N.C./Apex) matched a career high with a team-leading nine boards.
The Panthers will return home on Saturday, Nov. 21, when they host UNC Greensboro in the team's home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
