In a game of runs, the High Point University men's basketball team came up just short in a 92-85 loss at Big South leading VMI on Saturday afternoon in Cameron Hall.

The Panthers (5-14, 1-8 Big South) had a pair of players score more than 20 points, shot 53 percent from the floor and out-rebounded VMI (16-3, 8-1), 49-27, in the game. However, 31 turnovers and a 19-of-21 performance by the Keydets from the free throw line proved the difference in the contest.

HPU got career-best performances from both Nick Barbour and Cruz Daniels, scoring 25 and 21 points, respectively. Barbour drilled five three-pointers as part of his personal best performance. Daniels also pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to earn his second double-double of the season.

Jourdan Morris also finished with a double-double tallying 10 points and 12 boards. Eugene Harris connected on four treys as part of a 19-point performance and David Singleton dished out a personal best 11 assists to go along with seven points and six rebounds.

For the Keydets, Chavis (27) and Travis Holmes (20) combined for 47 points to lead the VMI attack. The duo became the highest scoring set of twins in NCAA history on a free throw by Chavis in the second half. VMI made 15 three-pointers in the game but were held to just 30 percent shooting from the arc.

High Point fell behind early as VMI opened the game with a 10-0 run. The Panthers missed their first five shots and committed three turnovers against the Keydets constant pressure before Nick Barbour drilled a three-pointer at the 17:05 mark for HPU's first score. From there, High Point continued to battle and even pulled to within two points at 23-21, on a Eugene Harris trey with 10 minutes left in the first period.

The Panthers kept things close until Barbour was whistled for his third foul of the half with 6:22 left and HPU down just four at 32-28. VMI scored the next five points and then closed the half on a 16-9 run to take a 48-37 lead into the halftime break. Barbour finished with 15 points in only 13 minutes of play.

VMI extended their advantage to 15 points, 58-43, before the Panthers roared back behind a 20-5 run to even the score at 63 with 11:22 remaining. HPU capped its surge with a 11-0 spurt that included nine points by Harris. The Keydets then scored the next 11 points on their way to an 18-4 run that put them back in front at 81-67 with six minutes left in the game.

HPU refused to go away though mounting a final charge with a 13-4 run to close the deficit to just five points, 90-85, in the final minute. The Panther defense sparked the late rally holding the Keydets to just six free throws in the final three minutes of play.

High Point continues its current four-game road swing on Tuesday with a return visit to the Commonwealth of Virginia for a game at Liberty. The Panthers and Flames will meet in their rematch at 7 p.m. from the Vines Center.
