Box Score The High Point University baseball team dropped a disappointing 4-3 loss in 10 innings to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
HPU slipped to 18-26 on the year with the loss while UNCG improved to 30-19.
The Panthers grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Jeff Cowan opened the game with single followed by a single from Chris Norwood that put runners on the corners. Billy Alvino then lifted a sacrifice fly to left allowing Cowan to score. Norwood stole second and scored the second run on an RBI single by Randy Schwartz.
HPU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning for a 3-0 advantage. Schwartz singled to leadoff the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Mahoney. After a groundout moved Schwartz to third, he scored on an RBI single to center by Max Fulginiti.
The Spartans cut into the Panther lead with two runs in the seventh. UNCG used three hits and a walk to push across their pair of scores. With no outs and runners on second and third, HPU reliever Jeremy Berg ended the threat retiring the next three batters on a strikeout, pop out and a groundout.
UNCG tied the game in the ninth with a run off of Panther closer Bubba O'Donnell. Tim Carrier led things off with a single and went to second after a sacrifice bunt. Corey Overholtzer singled home Carrier to knot then score at 3-3. The Spartans tallied the game winner in the bottom of the 10th as Matt Gaski singled home Adam Deleo.
Schwartz crafted a 3-for-4 performance at the plate to lead the Panthers with an RBI and a run scored. Cowan also had two hits and drew a pair of walks on the day. Jamie Serber started the game on the mound for High Point allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Serber hit three batters but induced three inning-ending double plays to aid his cause. O'Donnell (4-2) suffered the loss in 1.1 innings of relief.
Spartan reliever Greg Smith (4-1) earned the win after pitching 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
High Point hosts Longwood on Wednesday night (7 pm) at Williard Stadium in their next to last home game of the year. HPU visits Coastal Carolina, who leads the Big South and is ranked 15th in the nation, for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night.
