Senior Randy Schwartz had a memorable final home game at High Point belting a walk-off game winning homerun in the 10th inning on Tuesday night sending the Panthers to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over USC Upstate at Williard Stadium.

Schwartz, who went 3-for-5 at the plate, launched his team-leading ninth homer of the year over the centerfield wall. The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Panthers and upped their season mark to 19-30. USC Upstate fell to 23-28 on the year. The two squads split their two-game series with each home team posting a dramatic late-inning rally for a victory.

"It was nice to see Randy get a pitch to hit and attack it," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "I didn't think it was going to carry out of here, but he hit that ball pretty hard. It was ugly early, but we hung on and got a little help late. We'll take the win."

In addition to Schwartz' strong offensive night, High Point also got three hits and two RBI from Chris Norwood and a pair of hits by Alfie Wheeler. Max Fulginiti scored a pair of runs for the Panthers including the equalizer in the bottom of the ninth.

The Spartans got on the board first with a run in the fourth. Brian Dempsey was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a double down the leftfield line by Keith Bisgounis. Blake Green followed with a run scoring groundout to short sending Dempsey home.

The Panthers plated a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 1-1. Schwartz and Kyle Mahoney tallied back-to-back one out singles. Schwartz extended his current hit streak to nine games. After a failed double steal attempt left a runner at second with two outs, Wheeler slashed an RBI single scoring Mahoney.

Upstate added three runs in the sixth to grab a 4-1 advantage. The Spartans got five hits in the frame including RBI singles from AJ Clark and Jimmy Tanner.

High Point again rallied to knot the score plating three runs in the seventh for a 4-4 tie. With two outs, HPU got four straight singles by Fulginiti, Drew Geissinger, Jeff Cowan and Norwood. Cowan, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, drove in a run with his hit and Norwood pushed home two runners.

USC Upstate grabbed a one-run advantage in the ninth after manufacturing a run. Kyle Simpson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dempsey. Following a flyout to center, Green laced an RBI double down the leftfield line to score Simpson putting the Spartans in front 5-4.

The Panthers answered with a game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth. A pair of wild pitches uncorked by USCU reliever Robert Stegbauer aided the HPU rally. Fulginiti reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Two pitches later another wild pitch allowed Fulginiti to race home for the score.

After Jeremy Berg set down the top of the Spartans' lineup in order in the top of the 10th, Schwartz ended the game on the second pitch he saw from Stegbauer.

Berg (3-2) earned the victory for the Panthers after allowing just one hit in one and two-third innings of relief. Mikel Rodenberg started for HPU and went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Phillip Myers gave the Spartans seven strong innings of starting work before handing the ball to Stegbauer (1-3), who took the loss, for the final two innings.

High Point closes out the regular season this weekend with a three-game Big South Conference series against Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. The Panthers and Flames open the set on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by games at 4 p.m. on Saturday and a 1 p.m. Sunday finale.
