Box Score

The High Point University baseball team fell to 17th-ranked Coastal Carolina, 12-3, in the Big South series finale between the two squads on Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field following a nearly three and a half hour delay due to rain in the Myrtle Beach area.

HPU moved to 18-30 overall and 8-10 in Big South Conference play. Coastal improved to 41-11, 15-3 and also captured a share of the League's regular season title.

Scott Woodward opened the game with a single and stole second before moving to third on a groundout from David Sappelt and scored on a sacrifice fly from Dock Doyle. Coastal added four more runs in the second to grab a 5-0 advantage. Tommy Baldridge opened the frame with an opposite field home run to left.  With two outs, Derek Martin singled and Rico Noel was hit by a pitch. Woodward then drove in both runs with a double to left.  Sappelt followed with a single to left plating Woodward.

High Point got on the board in the third scoring a pair of runs. Pablo Rosario doubled to lead off the inning.  CCU starter Austin Fleet was able to retire the next two Panthers, before Randy Schwartz singled home Rosario and Max Fulginiti brought in Schwartz with an RBI single.

Coastal answered with three runs of their own in the third. David Anderson hit his fourth home run of the weekend to lead off the inning.  With one out, junior Tyler Bortnick singled and then scored on a homerun to left by Martin. Doyle added a two-run homer in the fourth giving the Chants a 10-2 advantage.

Billy Alvino hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot, in the fifth. However, Anderson added his fifth home run of the weekend in the sixth.  The Chanticleers concluded in the seventh, as Baldridge was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Fleet earned the win, after allowing two earned runs in five innings.  He gave up eight hits and stuck out three.  Anderson pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while Nick McCully and Pete Andrelczyk pitched the final two scoreless innings. Jamie Serber was tagged with the loss for High Point, after surrendering 10 run in three innings.

For High Point, Rosario, Alvino and Fulginiti each had two hits apiece. Anderson went 4-for-5 on the day to pace the Chants while Doyle drove in three runs.

This week marks the final week of the regular season with High Point slated to host USC Upstate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for their home finale before closing the regular season with a three-game series at Liberty this weekend.
