Panthers Fall to Radford on Senior Night

Box Score Four seniors ended the in-semester home season with a rain-delayed loss to Radford Sunday evening. The Panthers (16-23, 8-7 BSC) stranded multiple runners in three innings in the Senior Night loss, 7-4. Billy Alvino, Alfie Wheeler, and Randy Schwartz each went 1-for-3 on the night, while the Toth brothers went a combined 7-for-10 for Radford (16-22, 3-9 BSC).

Schwartz, Bubba O'Donnell, Ryan Basham, and Chris Norwood were honored in a pregame ceremony by head coach Sal Bando, Jr. Following the ceremony, the Panthers took the field to begin the game, but soon had to clear the field due to lightning in the area before the first pitch could be thrown. Hail and nearly an inch of rain delayed the game for three hours. Finally, at 4:58 p.m., Radford led off and promptly took a 3-0 lead over the Panthers after the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second HPU scored when Alvino was driven in on Alfie Wheeler's ground-out. Jeff Cowan also went around to score in the third off of a Matt Gantner single. The Panthers brought it to within a run in the fifth when Kyle Mahoney brought in Tucker Stobbe in from third. RU scored three more times in the sixth and seventh to take a 7-3 lead over High Point.

The Panthers made an attempt at a comeback in the seventh, as Drew Geissinger singled Wheeler in with two out. Gantner flew out to left field to end the inning. High Point loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but the threat was ended when Mahoney was barely thrown out on a close call at first base. O'Donnell came in to pitch a hitless ninth for HPU, but it wasn't enough to get the team back into the game, as the side was retired in order to end the game.

High Point next takes the field on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Cary, N.C. to battle ACC foe No. 4-ranked North Carolina before ending their pre-exam schedule at Longwood on Thursday at 7 p.m.
