Box Score Sophomore
Max Fulginiti went 3-for-4 with three runs scored en route to an 11-7 series-clinching victory over the Radford Highlanders. With the win the team improves to 16-22, including an 8-6 record against Big South opponents. Radford falls to 15-22, 2-9 BSC.
Jeff Cowan,
Chris Norwood, and
Kyle Mahoney each had two runs batted in to lead the squad.
Fans watched "The Sandlot" from the sheltered areas of Williard Stadium for about an hour and a half while diehards waited out a few splotches of rain that moved through the area in the bottom of the second inning.
The Panthers broke open the scoring after the rain delay in the second inning, when
Alfie Wheeler drew a one-out walk off of RU starter Adam Hoyt. After a Fulginiti single, Mahoney singled past first baseman Andrew Cook to drive Wheeler in. The Panthers loaded the bases with a Cowan walk and a Norwood hit by pitch. Hoyt then hit his second consecutive batter -
Billy Alvino - and that brought in Fulginiti from third.
Immediately after that HPU gave up three runs in the top of the third, thanks mostly to back-to-back triples by Radford sluggers Nachion Moore and Ben Toth.
High Point led off the bottom of the fourth with consecutive doubles by Fulginiti and Mahoney. The Panthers followed that up with back-to-back bunt singles by Cowan and Norwood to load the bases. Junior
Matt Gantner singled Cowan home to take the 3-2 lead.
HPU took two more quick runs in the bottom of the fifth when Cowan brought Fulginiti home off of an error, and Cowan was plated by a Norwood single to up the Panthers' lead to 7-3.
Not to be outdone, the Highlanders came back with a vengeance in the top of the sixth. With
Zach Scott on the mound, RU used three hits, a walk and a High Point error to get four runs across and tie the game at 7.
High Point quickly regained the lead they would keep for the rest of the night when
Randy Schwartz scored on Fulginiti's two-out single. The Panthers added three insurance runs over the next two innings to maintain their edge.
Bubba O'Donnell pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the impressive save, while Scott (1-4) picked up his first win of 2008.
The two teams will face each other again on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Williard Stadium. Fans are encouraged to donate to the Make-a-Wish Foundation to get a free ticket to the game. HPU's senior class, which includes Schwartz, Cowan, O'Donnell and Ryan Basham, will be honored during a pregame ceremony.
