Box Score High Point concluded their weekend series against Big South foe Winthrop with a tough 3-0 loss on Sunday at Winthrop Ballpark.
The loss drops the Panthers to 13-22 overall and 6-6 in Conference play while the Eagles improve to 15-20, 5-4 with the win.
High Point's offense struggled against the Winthrop pitching tandem of Ryan Mullins and Josh McDonald, as the Panthers went scoreless with just six hits on the day. Mullins (4-0) allowed five hits in 7.2 innings of work as the starter while McDonald pitched the final 1.1 innings giving up one hit to earn the save.
Senior Chris Norwood finished with a pair of hits to lead HPU. Junior catcher Billy Alvino singled in the fourth inning to extend his team-leading hit streak to 11 games.
The Panthers also got a solid pitching performance as Jamie Serber, R.J. Chlebnikow and Bubba O'Donnell scattered seven hits in defeat. Serber started the game for HPU and went 5.1 innings allowing five hits and just one earned run. Chebnikow retired the only hitter he faced and O'Donnell worked the final 2.1 innings of the game.
After two scoreless frames, Winthrop took a 1-0 lead putting a run on the board in the third. Tyler McBride led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a groundout. Tony Brunetti singled advancing the runner to third followed by an RBI single for Kevin Nolan. Serber ended any further scoring threat by inducing an inning-ending double play.
High Point had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to get a hit to drive in a run.
Winthrop added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, O'Donnell clipped McBride with a pitch. McBride stole second and moved to third on an error on the steal. Bryn Henderson then reached on a fielder's choice to second, as the Panthers attempted to throw out McBride going home. However, the throw got away allowing the run to score and Henderson to advance to second. Brunetti followed with a single up the middle scoring Henderson.
The weekend series at Winthrop closed a nine-game road swing for High Point, who next begin a four-game home stand versus longtime rival Elon on Tuesday at 7 p.m. HPU hosts Radford for three games next weekend in Big South Conference play.
