Box Score High Point scored runs in five consecutive innings including five runs in the eighth to earn a weekend sweep over UNC Asheville with an 11-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.
The Panthers (8-18, 3-3 Big South) got a third straight solid pitching performance to extend their current win streak to four games, while the Bulldogs dropped their fourth game in row slipping to 12-17 overall and 0-3 in Big South Conference play.
"I was real proud of our effort this weekend," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "We are not gonna quit and there is a lot of season left. We got three good starts which put us in a position to compete and gave us a chance to win a ballgame. I really enjoyed watching them play the game this weekend."
HPU starter Jamie Serber (2-2) allowed just two runs on seven hits in six complete innings to earn the victory. RJ Chlebnikow and Jeremy Berg combined for three innings of scoreless relief in closing out the win.
Billy Alvino, Randy Schwartz and Robby Kuzdale all posted 2-for-4 performances at the plate to lead the Panthers. Pablo Rosario drove in three runs on the day with Schwartz and Alfie Wheeler plating two runs each.
UNC Asheville starting pitcher Justin Schumer (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound giving up five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Schumer, who also was the Bulldogs designated hitter in the game, paced his team at the plate going 3-for-4 and scoring one of the squad's two runs. Kevin Weidenbacher extended his team-leading hit streak to 24 games with a single in the third.
High Point struck first scoring a pair of runs in third inning. Max Fuginiti drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Wheeler. Jeff Cowan followed with an RBI double down the right field line. After a walk by Rosario, Alvino grounded a ball through the left side to score Cowan giving HPU a 2-0 lead.
HPU upped their lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the fourth. Tucker Stobbe and Kuzdale notched back-to-back singles to start the frame. Both scored on a one-out double to the left field corner by Wheeler.
Asheville finally got on the board in the sixth when Reed Kreiser lifted a two-run homer over the left field wall making the score 5-2. Justin Schumer, who led off the inning with a single scored on the play.
The Panthers got one run back in the bottom half of the inning pushing their lead to 6-2. Alvino lashed a two-out double and came around to score on an RBI single for Matt Gantner.
HPU broke things open with five more runs in the seventh seizing an 11-2 advantage. With two outs, Rosario delivered the big blow blasting a three-run homer to right field, while Schwartz also added a two-run scoring double in the scoring flurry.
The Panthers begin a nine-game road swing with a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday at USC-Upstate. High Point's next home game is Tuesday, Apr. 15 at 7 p.m. versus long-time rival Elon.
