Box Score For the second straight night the High Point University baseball team rallied for a one-run win, topping UNC Asheville 2-1 on Saturday night at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium in the second game of a three-game series between the squads.
The Panthers (7-18, 2-3 Big South) outlasted the Bulldogs (12-16, 0-2) in a pitchers' duel on a cool night at the ballpark. Neither of the two starting pitchers surrendered an earned run in the contest.
Sophomore Sean Murphy (1-0), making just his third start of the year for HPU, picked up the victory after scattering three hits over eight innings while striking out a season-best seven with one walk. Murphy gave up just one unearned run on the night. Senior Bubba O'Donnell earned his third save of the week and the season after setting down UNCA in order in the ninth.
Michael Bogaert (4-3) suffered the hard-fought loss for Asheville allowing two unearned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Matt Gantner paced the Panthers at the plate going 3-for-4 on the night with an RBI. Pablo Rosario added a pair of hits in the victory. For UNC Asheville, Kevin Weidenbacher extended his current hit streak to 23 games after tallying one of the Bulldogs three hits in the game.
Asheville took an early lead scoring a run in the top of the third inning. Kevin Mattison reached on a fielding error and moved to third on a double by Weidenbacher. Elliott Arrington grounded out to deep short allowing Mattison to score giving UNCA a 1-0 advantage.
High Point seized the lead, 2-1, plating a pair of runs in the sixth inning. HPU used three hits and benefited from a pair of Bulldog fielding errors. Jeff Cowan reached on a one-out miscue to start the Panther rally and moved around to third on a single from Pablo Rosario, who advanced to second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Billy Alvino and Gantner followed with back-to-back RBI singles to drive in the Panther runs.
HPU held Asheville scoreless over the final five innings of play to secure the win.
The Panthers and Bulldogs conclude their Big South Conference weekend series at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
