Box Score

The High Point University baseball team suffered a 10-3 road loss at in-state foe Appalachian State on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Stadium.

HPU (4-18), making their only road appearance in a stretch of nine games on Tuesday, posted 10 hits versus the Mountaineers (12-11), who snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.

Sophomore Tucker Stobbe and junior Jeff Cowan each tallied a pair of hits to pace the Panthers at the plate while junior Matt Gantner finished with a team-leading two RBI.

Five different Mountaineers recorded multiple hits on Tuesday led by David Towarnicky's 3-for-3 performance.

ASU got out of the gate quickly scoring single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Isaac Harrow drove in the first App. State run with a sacrifice fly in the first. Towarnicky led off the Mountaineer second with a homer to right and David Rubenstein singled home Jason Rook, who had tripled, in the bottom of the third inning.

The Mountaineers added a run to their lead in the sixth on an RBI single from Towarnicky.

High Point got on the board in the top of the seventh as Randy Schwartz drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Stobbe followed with an RBI single to center trimming the HPU deficit to 4-1.

Appalachian State responded with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh off of HPU reliever Mike Grosso to take an 8-1 advantage. Grosso, who was making his season debut on the mound for the Panthers, worked just a third of an inning.

Gantner doubled in Alfie Wheeler and Pablo Rosario in the eighth to make the score 8-3, but the Mountaineers were able to push across a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame for the final margin.

Zach Quate (1-0) picked up the win for Appalachian State in his first collegiate start. Quate scattered six hits over seven innings of work while surrendering one run.

HPU starting pitcher Mikel Rodenberg (0-2) gave up seven hits in six innings of solid work while striking out three in his first career collegiate start.

The Panthers will next host four games in four days at Williard Stadium beginning with a Thursday night battle against Triad-rival North Carolina A&T (7 p.m.). High Point will also host Big South in-state foe UNC Asheville for a three game series with games on Friday (7 p.m), Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.)
