Box Score The High Point University men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout over Xavier University on Sunday to win the Marshall Classic Tournament in Huntington, W.Va.
HPU (2-5-1) junior Chris Shrum sent a header to sophomore Hiliare Babou on the right side in the 17th minute to set up the Panthers' first goal. Babou sent the ball into the left side of the net past XU (3-5-0) goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski.
The Panthers would tally all their goals in the first half of the contest. In the 30th minute Babou set up a Matt Tuttle for the second goal. Babou crossed the ball from the right side into Tuttle for the score.
"We're excited to win the Marshall Classic Tournament," said HPU head coach Dustin Fonder. "Hopefully this will give our team a boost of confidence going into our first Big South game against preseason favorite Winthrop. We'd really appreciate the student body coming out and supporting us as we go after the defending Big South champions on Wednesday."
High Point freshman goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt had seven saves in the game for the shutout while Sokolowski had five for XU.
Freshmen Justin Pruetz, Scott Rojo and Adam Hatem as well as Tuttle were named to the Marshall Classic All-Tournament team.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sept. 26 at home against defending Big South Champions Winthrop. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Vert Track and Soccer Stadium. HPU and WU last met in the 2006 Big South Championship game.
