The High Point University baseball team suffered its second consecutive loss falling 6-1 against Big South rival Winthrop on Monday night at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.

The Panthers (24-24, 9-8 Big South) scored their lone run in the eighth inning after tallying just six hits on the night. The Eagles (29-19, 13-1) captured their 10th straight Big South game and posted their 11th win in a row over HPU.

For the second consecutive game, Winthrop got a complete game performance from their starting pitcher as Jason Franzblau (8-3) scattered six hits allowing only one run with three strikeouts in nine innings.

High Point pitchers surrendered just two hits and two runs over the first seven innings, but were plagued by nine walks and three errors. HPU hurlers stranded 17 Winthrop runners for the game.

HPU starter Brandon Moore (2-3) worked 3.2 innings stranding six runners after issuing six walks. Reliever Chad Jennings pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three walks.

Winthrop got their first run fourth for the 1-0 lead. John Murrian reached on a leadoff error and moved to second on a wild pitch. A walk by Eddie Tisdale and sacrifice bunt by Rand Baughman, one of seven by the Eagles on the night, moved runners into scoring position.  After Murrian was thrown out at the plate on a grounder, Phil Carey walked the bases loaded followed by an RBI walk by Tommy Lentz.

The Eagles made it 2-0 in the fifth scoring run on a two-out error by the Panthers. WU upped their lead to 3-0 in the eighth getting three consecutive singles by Carrara, Carey and Lentz to plate a run.

The Panthers answered with their lone run of the game in the bottom of the frame as Pablo Rosario (pictured) and Alfie Wheeler swatted back-to-back two out doubles to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Winthrop closed the door on an HPU comeback in the ninth adding three runs on three hits.  Kevin Nolan drove in a pair of the runs with a two out single.

Rosario led the way for HPU at the plate going 2-for-3 and scoring the lone run. Carrara was Winthrop's top hitter boasting a 2-for-4, two runs scored performance.

High Point and Winthrop conclude their three-game series at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
