Box Score The High Point University baseball team concluded its Big South Conference slate along with the home portion of its 2007 schedule with a disappointing 11-5 loss to Charleston Southern on Sunday afternoon at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium.
The Panthers (25-27) ended regular season league play with a 10-11 record following the loss. Charleston Southern improved to 19-32 overall and 4-14 in conference play after taking their first league series this season.
"We didn't play particularly well," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "Disappointed that we limped to the finish line with how we played. Luckily, we have a chance to start all over and make it right come tournament time."
Charleston Southern jumped out of the gates quickly plating three runs in the first inning. Chris Krogmeier got a one-out single and went to second when Justin Fyle drew a walk. After a pop out, Stephen Herzog doubled both runners home for a 2-0 lead. Sean Doherty followed with an RBI single pushing across the third score.
High Point got on the board in the second as freshman Tucker Stobbe (pictured) belted his fourth homer of the season driving in a pair of runs to make the score 3-2. Stobbe's blast scored Chris Norwood, who had singled for the Panthers first hit of the day.
CSU upped their advantage in the fourth when Herzog tallied a leadoff homer to left putting the Bucs in front 4-2.
The Buccaneers broke things open in the fifth scoring five runs to take a 9-2 advantage. A trio of HPU miscues and a pair of walks in the frame aided the CSU scoring surge.
The Panthers clawed back with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Robby Kuzdale laced a one-out double and then scored following a wild pitch and an errant throw by the Charleston Southern catcher.
Fyle got the run back for the Bucs in the sixth taking a pitch from HPU reliever Glenn Jones over the centerfield fence upping CSU's lead to 10-3. Charleston collected three singles by Adam Brown, Wes Brundridge and Fyle to plate the Buccaneers final run of the day in the eighth.
High Point trimmed the final deficit scoring a run in both the eighth and ninth innings. Randy Schwartz launched a ball to left in the eighth that was dropped by the CSU outfielder allowing him to reach second base. J. Williams singled Schwartz to third and he scored on a double-play grounder. Kuzdale crushed a triple to centerfield in the ninth and scored on Jeff Cowan's RBI single.
Bubba O'Donnell (3-6) suffered the loss for HPU after working 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs (four earned). Reliever Tom Boleska struck out three in pitching a perfect final 1.2 innings.
Kuzdale finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Panthers. Stobbe went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two walks in just his second start of the season at first base.
Brandon Roberts (3-4) scattered five hits and allowed just three runs in picking up the victory for CSU. Sean Doherty led the Bucs with three hits while Herzog added a pair of hits and three RBIs.
The Panthers have a pair of midweek non-conference tilts slated this week before enjoying the weekend off from competition in preparation of the Big South Conference Tournament starting on May 22 in Rock Hill, S.C. HPU visits Western Carolina on Tuesday (7 p.m.) before closing the 2007 regular season at longtime rival Elon on Wednesday (7 p.m.)
