Box Score The High Point baseball team overcame a five-run deficit and a near one hour rain delay on Wednesday night in picking up a 9-7 victory over long-time rival Elon at Latham Park.
The Panthers (15-14) earned their fourth straight win, setting a season best win streak, and earned a season sweep of its two games against Elon (14-14).
Elon grabbed the early lead pushing across five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Phoenix banged out three hits including a two-run homer and benefited from a walk and a hit batsmen in grabbing the 5-0 lead.
High Point rallied in the top of the second putting up six runs of its own on five hits grabbing a 6-5 lead. J. Williams led things off with a single followed by a homerun from Randy Schwartz, his team leading fifth of the season. Tucker Stobbe walked and scored when Pablo Rosario blasted his second homer of the year. Alfie Wheeler followed with a single and Robby Kuzdale then belted the Panthers' third homer of the frame to close the scoring.
The Phoenix knotted the score at 6-6 in the third scoring on a wild pitch by Matt Schlanger. Elon added another run in the fourth to hold a 7-6 advantage. Ryan Addison tallied an RBI single following a walk and hit batter that put runners on base.
The game was held up for 54 minutes due to a rain following the fifth inning of play.
The Panthers got rolling quickly after the break grabbing the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. Wheeler led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Kuzdale followed with single that allowed Wheeler to score after a fielding error by the Elon centerfielder. Kuzdale advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI double by Jeff Cowan. After taking third on a wild pitch, Cowan crossed the plate after an RBI single by Schwartz.
Elon made several charges down the stretch stranding five runners in the sixth through eighth innings before being set down in order in the ninth.
Kuzdale and Schwartz both went 2-for-5 on the night to pace the Panthers at the plate. Kuzdale, who had two RBI and two runs scored, extended his current hit streak to 14 games marking the longest for any HPU batter this year. Schwartz drove in three runs in the victory.
Zach Scott (1-1) picked up the victory for High Point after pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief with four strikeouts. Tom Boleska earned his second save of the season working a perfect ninth inning that featured just nine pitches and included a strikeout to end the game.
Zach Booker (2-2) suffered the loss for Elon, giving up three runs on three hits and eight walks in 3.2 innings of work.
The victory puts HPU over the .500 mark for just the second time this season and first since opening the year 2-1.
High Point continues its current nine-game road swing this weekend with its first Big South road series at Radford beginning on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
