Box Score

All nine High Point starters recorded a hit as the Panthers pounded out 16 hits en route to a 14-4 victory over Triad-rival North Carolina A&T on Tuesday afternoon at Coy O. Williard, Sr. Stadium.

HPU (9-11) tallied double-digit hits for the third straight time and scored over 10 runs for the second consecutive game in the victory. The Aggies (3-12) sent seven pitchers to the mound in suffering their seventh loss in their last eight games.

Sophomores Billy Alvino and Jeff Cowan both recorded three hits for High Point to lead the offensive barrage. Alvino was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of doubles, both coming in the same inning.  Junior Randy Schwartz, who extended his team-best hit streak to 12 games, and freshman Tucker Stobbe both also recorded multiple hits in the contest.

In addition to strong hitting, High Point also got solid defense and a quality pitching performance. Senior left-hander Brandon Moore (1-1) picked up the win after scattering three hits over seven innings of shutout work on the mound with seven strikeouts. He set down the last 12 hitters he faced in order.

"Brandon Moore was outstanding," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "We needed to see that out of him and we're happy that he took advantage of the opportunity. He was throwing three pitches for strikes and he's earned a conference start based on how he has pitched the last two times out. I'm very proud of him."

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, High Point scored runs in four consecutive frames beginning with a single run in the third. Alfie Wheeler singled to lead off the third and moved to second on a groundout. Cowan singled him to third followed by a sacrifice fly to left by Chris Norwood to put HPU up 1-0.

The Panthers broke things open in the fourth inning pushing across seven runs with six hits and four stolen bases. Alvino led off with a double and scored on a double by Stobbe. Schwartz singled home Stobbe then stole second and moved to third on a ball-four wild pitch to Wheeler. Robby Kuzdale recorded an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single from Cowan. Norwood singled to put runners on the corners then stole second. An Aggie wild pitch allowed Cowan to score and moved Norwood to third. J. Williams walked and stole second setting up Alvino for his second double of the frame, that drove in a pair of runs to make the score 8-0.

HPU added another run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Wheeler than tacked on five more runs in the sixth to close their scoring. The Panthers batted around for the second time in the game tallying three hits and drawing four walks in upping the score to 14-0.

Freshman pitcher Joe Miller surrendered a solo homer to Nelson Santos in the eighth inning for A&T's first score. The Aggies added three more runs in the ninth off of freshman Artie Clyde to conclude the scoring in the game.

Chris Eggers (2-2) allowed nine hits and gave up eight runs in 3.2 innings of work to take the loss for North Carolina A&T.

High Point concludes its current seven-game home stand this weekend with a three-game set against Lafayette College. The Panthers and Leopards meet at 2:30 p.m., on Friday before squaring off in a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
