Box Score The High Point baseball team pounded out 11 hits and exploded for six runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 7-2 victory over Longwood on Wednesday afternoon at First Horizon Park in Greensboro.
The Panthers improve to 2-1 with their second straight win while the Lancers slip to 2-2 this season. Junior Randy Schwartz and freshman Robby Kuzdale led the HPU offense tallying three hits each on the day.
HPU starter Bubba O'Donnell struck out five and allowed just three hits and one run in six innings of work on the mound. O'Donnell set down the first six Longwood hitters before allowing a lead-off walk in the third that turned into the Lancers first run of the game.
Scott Kimble drew that walk for Longwood and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt attempt and advanced to third when O'Donnell's throw to first went over the glove of Schwartz at first. After O'Donnell picked off the Lancer runner at first, Topher Ellis doubled home Kimble to put Longwood on top 1-0.
High Point rallied in the fourth inning as the Panthers batted around in a six-hit, six-run frame. Schwartz, who went 3-for-4, got the scoring started belting a shot over the right field fence for the team's first homerun of the year. J. Williams and Anthony Bell followed with back-to-back singles then Alfie Wheeler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kuzdale laced an RBI single to put HPU in front 2-1 then Jeff Cowan drew a walk to force home a third Panther run. Chris Norwood joined the fun driving in another run with a single before Matt Schlanger closed the scoring with a two-run double.
Kuzdale singled and moved around the bases thanks to a pair of hit batsmen and a stolen base in the sixth to add another run to the High Point total. The rookie centerfielder led the team with a pair of runs scored.
The Lancers got a run back in the seventh before Zach Scott and Mike Grosso combined to close out the game for the Panthers over the final two innings.
"Gave the game ball to Bubba (O'Donnell)," said HPU head coach Sal Bando. "He had a great game. He works fast and kept our defense on its toes and gave us a chance. I'm very happy with adjustments that our hitters made after this weekend. We stayed on the ball today and drove it."
High Point now hits the road for the first time in 2007 traveling to Tampa, Fla., for a three-game series this weekend at South Florida. HPU and USF start things off on Friday at 6 p.m.
