The High Point University baseball team split a doubleheader against Dayton on Saturday dropping the opener 4-2 before rallying for a 10-5 victory in the nightcap at First Horizon Park.

HPU (3-7) snapped a six-game losing skid with Saturday night's win. Dayton took the weekend series winning two of three games to improve to 2-4 on the year.

The Flyers scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Dayton's Cole Tyrell, but High Point exploded for seven runs on six hits and two Dayton errors in the second inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

With two outs in the second, J. Williams singled up the middle and moved to third on a double to right by Randy Schwartz. Robby Kuzdale doubled home both Williams and Schwartz. Alfie Wheeler followed with an RBI single through the right side. Wheeler stole second followed by a walk by Pablo Rosario. Jeff Cowan loaded the bases getting on after an error by UD's first baseman. Chris Norwood was hit by a pitch forcing in a run to make the score 4-2. Bill Manion drove in a pair of runs with a single and Billy Alvino closed the scoring with an RBI single.

Dayton added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but High Point answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to maintain their five run advantage, 9-4. The Flyers scored again in the sixth but would get no closer as HPU reliever Chad Jennings held them scoreless over the final four innings while allowing just two hits.

High Point closed the scoring with a run in the seventh as Alvino doubled and move to third on a groundout. Schwartz followed with a sacrifice fly to right giving HPU the final 10-5 margin.

The Panthers pounded out 12 hits in the game with five players tallying two hits each. Manion went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Kuzdale also was 2-for-4 with a team-leading three RBIs. Tony Flores improved to 2-1 earning the win after pitching five innings with five strikeouts. Jennings earned his first career save. UD starter Sean Finn (0-1) took the loss allowing seven runs in just 1.2 innings of work.

Game one featured a solid pitching duel between HPU's Bubba O'Donnell and Dayton's Quinn Haselhorst with both hurlers getting through the seventh inning.

The Flyers scratched across two runs in the first inning aided by an HPU fielding error. Rosario singled in Alvino in the second to cut the High Point deficit to 2-1 after two innings. Dayton added a run in the fourth behind three straight hits including an RBI double by Tyrell. Both teams added a run in the seventh to close the scoring at 4-2.

UD leadoff hitter Michael Massa went 4-for-5 with two runs scored to pace the Flyer offense. Haselhorst (1-0) picked up the win with 7.1 innings of work allowing just two runs on seven hits. Kyle Lindsay worked the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first save of the year.

Rosario tallied a pair of hits to lead High Point at the plate. O'Donnell (1-1) was the hard luck loser for the Panthers losing the decision after going seven innings with six strikeouts and just two earned runs. RJ Chlebnikow and Zach Scott combined for a pair of scoreless innings in relief for the Panthers.

High Point continues its current home stand with a pair of midweek games against local rivals Elon (Tuesday) and UNC Greensboro (Wednesday). First pitch against the Phoenix is slated for 2 p.m. at First Horizon Park.
