The High Point University women's soccer team saw their three-game win streak come to an end on Monday afternoon in a disappointing 6-1 loss at Coastal Carolina in the Big South Conference opener for the Panthers.
HPU slipped to 4-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play while Coastal Carolina improved to 9-4-1 and 3-0-0 following their sixth consecutive win.
The Chanticleers got things rolling early scoring four goals in the opening half of play. It marked the first time this year that an HPU opponent had recorded a score in the first 45 minutes of play.
CCU got a hat trick from junior Blair Monroe and five points from senior Amanda Gelsomino. High Point freshman forward Sara Rager tallied the Panther's lone goal in the contest.
Coastal had a solid first period converting four goals on five shots. At 7:01, Monroe received feeds from Gelsomino and senior Ashleigh Gunning and beat HPU starting sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Abbott near post for the 1-0 lead. Monroe would score her second of the day at 15:32 as a free kick from senior Emma Humphries went to Gunning, who would feed the junior for a 2-0 advantage. Gelsomino added her own goal at 21:42 following a feed to space by Gunning. CCU closed the scoring in the first half when Humphries took a cross from Emily McColl at 26:45 and beat Abbott.
"Give credit to Coastal as they were able to finish all their opportunities," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "We didn't show up to play today and I don't understand why because it was only our second game in the last 15 days. We need to get back home and figure out who we are and what we are about. We need to show up, work hard and just play soccer."
Monroe earned her hat trick at 56:19 after taking a pass from Humphries and beating HPU reserve keeper Hannah Nail in the upper part of the goal. Gelsomino then tallied her second goal of the day at 64:12 when she deposited a rebound off a Gunning shot into the back of the net.
High Point got on the board and prevented the shutout at 65:17 as Rager scored off a Laura Eldridge midfield pass.
High Point continues its current road stretch on Friday at 4 p.m. against Francis Marion before returning to league play on Sunday at VMI.
