HPU Women Best Radford, 2-1

Panthers snap Highlanders six-game win streak

Senior Jen Evans had a goal and assist in HPU victory

High Point scored a pair of second half goals to rally past Radford, 2-1, on Wednesday night in Big South women's soccer action at Richard F. Vert Track and Soccer Stadium.

The victory by the Panthers snapped the Highlanders' six-match winning streak as they improve to 6-5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big South. RU falls to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the Conference.

"It is good to get a home conference win against a very solid Radford team," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "We missed some opportunities early in the game. We made some slight adjustments at halftime and the team responded well early in the second half. We did a great job of finishing our chances in the second half and that enabled us to earn the victory."

High Point came out of the gates in the second half and tied the match just 2:14 in, on the first career goal for freshman Jillie Johnston. Fellow freshman Sara Rager crossed the ball to senior Jen Evans and she found Johnston with a short touch for the equalizer.

Evans then scored the game-winner in the 57th minute to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. On a free kick, sophomore Courtney Spotts served the ball into the box and senior Alex Torriero flicked it to Evans for a header passed the Highlander goalkeeper. The goal marked the third of the season for Evans and was her HPU program record ninth career game-winning tally.

Using a strong defensive effort the rest of the match, the Panthers did not allow the Highlanders a second half shot, helping them hold on for the victory.

Radford took advantage of an early counter, to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. After a flurry by High Point, including a header off the crossbar, junior McKenzie Vergara got a shot off that was saved by HPU's Marisa Abbott. With the ball trickling towards the goal, a Panther defender cleared the ball right back to Vergara, who slotted it into the open net, just 4:51 into the match. It was Vergara's third straight game with a goal and her seventh of the season.

Along with the win streak, a couple of individual streaks came to an end for Radford as senior Brianna Kipper, the Big South's leading goal scorer, had her six-game goal scoring streak snapped and freshman Latrice Lee had her seven-match point scoring streak ended.

The Panthers out shot Radford, 11-4 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Alex Traughber made three saves in net for RU, while Abbott stopped two shots for High Point.

High Point continues their final home stand of the 2007 season on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Liberty.
