Box Score The High Point University women's basketball team fell to Florida State, 67-39 on Tuesday. Florida State was the third and final Atlantic Coast Conference team on the docket for the Panthers this season.
For the Panthers (6-7) senior Leslie Cook and sophomore Caitlin Thys each recorded 11 points to lead the team.
Jacinta Moore recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead a quartet of Seminoles (11-3) in double figures. Alicia Gladden added 14 while Nikki Anthony and Alysha Harvin had 12 and 10, respectively.
Florida State came out of the gates strong to control most of the first half, holding the Panthers to just 13 points in the opening period. FSU led HPU 22-3 at the 11:09 mark before the Panthers started to find their offense with a jumper from Thys at 7:57 followed by a steal and fast break lay-up by Candyce Sellars. The Seminoles took a 39-13 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission Brittany Miller hit a jumper for the Seminoles followed by a made free throw from Moore to give FSU a 29 point lead, their largest of the game. High Point would respond with a 12-5 run sparked by back-to-back baskets from Cook and Thys to cut the lead to 20 at 11:42. That is as close as the Panthers would get in the second half as Florida State went on to claim the victory.
Florida State, the seventh tallest team in the nation, outrebounded the Panthers 52-25 and had 36 points in the paint to HPU's 10. The Panthers only shot 18-percent in the first half but rallied to shoot 47-percent in the second while holding the Seminoles to just 23-percent in the second half.
High Point will enjoy a week off before returning to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 9 when they host Longwood. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Millis Center.
