Box Score A trio of High Point pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout performance on Monday afternoon as the Panthers captured the series-deciding game against UNC Asheville by a 2-0 count.
Junior starter David Parker worked 7.1 scoreless innings for the Panthers allowing just one hit and only three base runners during his stint. Senior reliever Chris Marks worked two-thirds of an inning before handing the ball over to freshman Tom Boleska, who earned his first career save with a perfect final frame.
The win gave High Point its fourth consecutive Big South series victory upping the Panther's record to 21-23 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The victory gave HPU a share of the lead in the Big South standings along with Winthrop and Liberty and also established a new program record for Division I conference wins in a season. UNC Asheville fell to 16-24, 5-10 on the year with the loss.
After hitting the leadoff batter in the first inning, Parker set down the next 15 UNCA batters he faced before giving up his lone hit, a double by Steven Burnich, to open the sixth inning. Matt Henson moved Burnich to third with a groundout to first but Parker thwarted the threat getting Kevin Mattison to lineout to first and Rob Vernon to groundout to short. HPU firstbaseman Randy Schwartz made a diving stab with the infield pulled in to catch Mattison's liner.
That was UNCA's only real scoring threat as a walk by Edmond Locklear in the eighth marked their final baserunner of the contest and the end to Parker's solid outing. Marks closed the eighth inducing a pair of lineouts to leftfield.
Bulldog starter Michael Bogaert also had a strong performance allowing two runs on just five hits over seven full innings of work. A pair of Asheville hurlers posted a scoreless inning of relief work in the eighth.
High Point senior secondbaseman Dustin Holtzman accounted for both of the Panther's scores on Monday. Holtzman drew a two-out walk in the fifth, moved to third on a single by Justin Pinyan before scoring on an RBI-single from Alfie Wheeler to put HPU up 1-0. He blasted a solo homer in the seventh, his second of the year, giving High Point an insurance run.
Wheeler led the way offensively with a pair of hits for HPU. Freshman Jeff Cowan (0-for-2) and senior Mark Shorey (0-for-2) both had their double-digit hit streaks halted in the contest. Cowan's streak ended at a team season best 16 games.
"All three of our pitchers were great today but I thought Parker's outing was exceptional," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "I only wish we could have scored a few more runs so that I would have been able to enjoy the performance more. This was a big win for us not only in the standings but also because the bottom half of our order stepped it up and provided us with a spark. Hopefully we can continue to play solid baseball over our final month."
The Panthers have little time to rest as HPU heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. High Point will also host North Carolina A&T on Thursday at 3 p.m. before enjoying a weekend off from competition.
