The High Point University baseball team used stellar pitching and timely hitting to earn a 6-0 shutout victory over Triad-rival UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night at the UNCG Ballpark.

The win allowed HPU to split the season series with UNCG and marked the Panther's 10th win in their last 12 games. High Point improved to 18-21 overall while the Spartans slipped to 14-20 on the year.

Junior hurler David Parker provided High Point with quality work in his first career start. The Hollywood, Fla., native picked up the victory (1-1) after scattering four hits over six innings of work. Prior to the UNCG tilt, Parker had seen just 7.2 innings of work in five previous appearances.

The HPU relief corps of Brandon Moore, Glenn Jones, RJ Chlebnikow and Bubba O'Donnell helped earn the team's second combined shutout by allowing just three hits over the final three innings of the contest.

"David Parker was fantastic for us tonight," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "He really gave us a quality start and our relievers also came in and pitched well. That is definitely something we are going to need down the stretch of the season. I was also glad to see us get some runs early after struggling a little at the plate on Sunday."

High Point scored in each of the first three innings to grab the early 4-0 advantage.

In the first, Jeff Norwood singled and stole second. With two outs, Randy Schwartz delivered a run-scoring double to put the Panthers on the board. Dustin Holtzman singled in the second and then scored on a single to centerfield by Justin Pinyan, when the UNCG centerfielder misplayed the ball allowing it to roll to the fence. Pinyan ended up on third after the miscue and later scored on a single by Jeff Cowan.

Senior Mark Shorey continued to swing his hot bat crushing the first pitch he saw in the third inning over the right field fence for his Big-South leading 13th homerun.

HPU added a run in the fifth when Cowan drew a leadoff walk then scored one batter later as Shorey smashed a double into the rightfield corner. The Panthers concluded the scoring with a final run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Ryan Laboy.

The Spartans had their chances to get on the board, but the HPU's pitching and defense forced UNCG into leaving 14 runners stranded on base. UNC Greensboro left the bases loaded in the third, fourth and ninth innings.

Shorey led a quartet of Panther players with two-hit performances going 2-for-3 on the night with two RBIs and two runs scored. Norwood, Schwartz and Holtzman each also had a pair of hits.  Cowan extended his season-high hit streak to 12 games.

Clay Gibson (2-1) took the loss for the Spartans after going just two innings and allowing seven hits and four runs.

High Point returns to action on Wednesday as the Panthers host another Southern Conference member, Wofford, at 3 p.m. at Erath Field. HPU won at Wofford, 8-3, on Feb. 15 and the Terriers come into the contest having lost 13 straight games and been held scoreless for 19 consecutive innings. Sophomore standout Eammon Portice will take the mound for the Panthers.
