Box Score The High Point baseball team belted four homeruns and sophomore pitcher Eammon Portice tossed a complete game as the Panthers rolled to an 11-1 win over Charleston Southern in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
High Point improves to 5-2 in Big South play and 13-19 overall with the win while the Buccaneers dropped to 10-21 overall, 4-6 in Big South play. The victory also extended HPU's current season-best win streak to five games.
Portice cruised through eight innings with a shutout before allowing a Wes Brundridge lead off homer in the bottom of the ninth. The right-hander improved to 3-4 on the season (2-0 in Big South action), allowing just six hits while striking out seven.
The first four batters in the HPU lineup all belted homers as the Panthers tallied 16 hits on the day with seven of the nine starters posting hits.
Third baseman Jeff Cowan (1), designated hitter Chris Norwood (5) and rightfielder Mark Shorey (10) all homered and had three-hit days. First baseman Randy Schwartz also had three hits and catcher Billy Aguiar had two hits, including his second homerun this season.
For Shorey, the homerun marked his fourth in the last five games and also extended his team-leading hit streak to 14 games.
High Point scored three runs in each of the first two innings to grab an early 6-0 advantage. The Panthers tacked on three more in the sixth to put the game away, while adding single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
CSU starter DJ Throneburg (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs and five hits in only 1/3 inning of work. Brundridge and Justin Fyle had two hits each to pace the Buccaneers offensively.
The two teams will are slated to conclude their weekend set with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
