Box Score N.C. A&T got things rolling in the bottom of the first as Nick Mayo led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error before stealing third. After a pair of outs, Williams Sunderland drove him in with a single. After HPU starter Zach Zupan (0-2) loaded the bases with a walk, Raul Santiago cleared the bases with a double to right center.
High Point answered with single runs in both the second and third innings. Ryan Laboy doubled home Dustin Holtzman to earn the Panthers first run while Chris Norwood and Mark Shorey posted back-to-back doubles to plate HPU's other run.
The Aggies added a run in the third and a pair of scores in the fifth to widen their lead to 7-2 and then closed the scoring with a run in the seventh for the final margin.
Oates went the distances on the hill for A&T scattering the six hits and allowing just the two runs while striking out four. Zupan, who took the loss for High Point, was one of four pitchers seeing action on the mound on Tuesday.
Sunderland paced the Aggie offense going 3-for-5 on the day with three RBIs.
High Point returns home to open a four-game home stand starting with a doubleheader versus Jacksonville State on Saturday. First pitch of game one is slated for Noon with the second game to follow 30 minutes after the completion of game one. The Panthers and Gamecocks will conclude their weekend set with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
