High Point Outslugs Dayton, 11-7

Box Score

Mark Shorey and Chris Norwood both drove in four runs on Saturday to help lead the High Point Panthers to an 11-7 victory over Dayton in the second game of the weekend series between the two teams at George Erath Field.

The win improves HPU's season record to 7-10 and snaps a three-game losing skid. Dayton falls to 3-5 on the year.

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the first and maintained a lead throughout fending off a late charge by the Flyers to earn the hard-fought victory.

Shorey led the way for High Point at the plate going 4-for-5 on the day with four RBIs and his third homerun of the season. Norwood went 3-for-5, scored three times and hit his first career grand slam, his third homer of the season.

A quartet of Dayton players posted multi-hit performances with Bryan Chandler and Max Navalinski each driving in two with their pairs of hits.

Norwood tripled in the home half of the first inning and scored on a single by Shorey. Shorey stole second and following a walk by J. Williams, scored along with Williams on a double from Dustin Holtzman.

Dayton trimmed the deficit with a run in the top of the second as Chandler, who reached base after being hit by a pitch and advancing to third on a balk, was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Navalinski. High Point pushed the lead back to three at 4-1 in the bottom of the frame as Shorey pushed Jeff Cowan across the plate after the Panthers got an extra out thanks to a passed ball on a third strike.

HPU played small ball in the fourth, scoring a run without a single hit. Ryan Laboy led off with a walk than advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alfie Wheeler. Laboy then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cowan.

The Flyers scored a pair of runs in the fifth to trim the Panther lead to two at 5-3. A leadoff walk followed by a pair of hits pushed the runs across the plate. With one out in the sixth, Dayton loaded the bases against HPU starter Matt Christie but reliever Zach Zupan struck out the next two batters to end the scoring threat.

"Matt (Christie) gave us another solid start today," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "I thought (Zach) Zupan came in and got a pair of big outs for us. It was good to see us get the bats going with some timely hitting today. Norwood and Shorey both had great days at the plate."

Norwood gave the Panthers some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth when he cleared the bases with grand slam to put HPU ahead 9-3.

UD got back-to-back homers from Joe McSoley and Navalinski off Zupan with two outs in the seventh to stay alive.

After a single by Norwood, Shorey blasted a shot over the left field wall in the eighth to again give the Panthers a six-run lead. Dayton posted a pair of runs in the ninth off reliever Glenn Jones before Bubba O'Donnell stopped the Flyers final surge by striking out pinch hitter Craig Rohren and getting Roberto Ramos to pop out to short.

Christie (3-0) earned the victory for the Panthers allowing five hits and three runs while striking out four over 5.1 innings of work. Zupan and Jones both pitched over an inning and allowed two runs each in relief while O'Donnell (3) picked up the save after stranding a pair of runners in the ninth.

Quinn Haselhorst (0-1) pitched four innings giving up five hits and four earned runs in the loss. Reliever Cale Ort allowed seven hits and six runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

The two squads will conclude their three-game weekend series with the rubber-game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Freshman Tom Boleska (0-3) gets the start for High Point against Dayton's Chris Rubio (0-1).
