Box Score

The High Point University baseball team scored a run in the eighth against Brown to extend their current win streak to a season high four games with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday at Erath Field.

With the victory, the Panthers improve to 12-19 overall while the Bears slip to 0-9 this season after dropping their fourth consecutive one-run decision.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Mark Shorey continued his blistering pace at the plate for HPU finishing with a 3-for-3 day and extending his current hit streak to a team and season best 13 games. Shorey also picked up his second save of the season throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

Fellow senior Chris Marks provided the Panthers with a quality start on the mound scattering four hits and allowing just one run in seven innings of work. Marks struck out four and did not walk any of the 25 batters he faced. Glenn Jones worked a scoreless eighth and picked up the win to improve to 2-0.

The Bears struck first as second baseman Bryan Tews connected with one of the few misses by Marks in the third inning. Tews' shot bounced off the leftfield line foul pole for his first homer of the year putting BU up 1-0.

High Point answered in the fifth with two outs. Chris Norwood drew a walk and stole second. Following an intentional walk issued to Shorey, Billy Aguiar slapped a ball to left center scoring Norwood and knotting the score at 1-1.

The two pitching staffs held the offenses in check until the bottom of the eighth when HPU scored the deciding run. J. Williams led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on a single through the right side by Randy Schwartz. Matt Gantner then delivered the game winning hit with a single to left.

Brown University starter Ethan Silverstein (0-1) took the loss despite pitching seven innings with six strikeouts and just two earned runs.

HPU returns to Big South Conference action this weekend at Charleston Southern with a three-game series starting on Friday at 3 p.m. High Point looks to build on its three-game sweep of Radford this past weekend.
