Box Score High Point scored five runs in the sixth inning to erase a three-run Radford lead and secure a 6-4 win Sunday afternoon in a Big South Conference baseball game at George Erath Field.
The Panthers (11-19; 4-2 Big South) scored first, tallying one run in the bottom of the first when senior Mark Shorey (Peabody, Mass.), who had a home run every game of the series, hit a solo shot. The would be HPU's only run until the fifth-inning outburst.
The Highlanders (4-20; 1-5 Big South) meanwhile, scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. After freshman Will Naylor (Clifton, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice and freshman Rocky Weiss (Lynchburg, Va.) singled, sophomore Ben Toth (Bedford, N.H.) hit a three-run homer. RU added another run in the fifth when Alex Gregory's (Great Falls, Va.) RBI single drove in sophomore Nate Toth (Bedford, N.H.), who reached on a walk.
Radford seemed set to hold High Point in the sixth, turning a double play after sophomore Randy Schwartz (Kleinburg, Ontario) reached on an error. A walk by senior Dustin Holtzman (Boca Raton, Fla.) and an freshman Alfie Wheeler (Manteo, N.C.) single set the stage for freshman Jeff Cowan's (Scarborough, Ontario) two-out triple that cleared the bases. Sophomore Chris Norwood (Jamestown, N.C.) then singled to score Cowan and tie the game. Freshman Billy Aguiar (Holtsville, N.Y.) then singled to score Norwood, who'd advanced on a wild pitch, from second. Shorey, who had reached on an intentional walk, scored on a wild pitch.
Radford managed just two hits in the final three innings, leaving four runners stranded.
Freshman Tom Boleska (1-5) earned his first win of the year, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Sophomore Bubba O'Donnell (Millville, N.J.) picked up his fourth save, throwing three innings and allowing two hits. Sophomore Michael Schurz (Norfolk Va.) (0-2) took the loss, facing four batters, allowing three hits and three runs. RU senior starter Josh Deaver (Waynesboro, Va.) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned on five hits. Freshman Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va.) closed out the game for the Highs, throwing 2 1/3 innings, and allowing just one hit.
Senior David Landman (Uniontown, Pa.) led RU with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Ben Toth had three RBI for the Highlanders. Cowan was 2-for-4 for the Panthers with two RBI.
The Panthers play at home Tuesday, entertaining Brown at 2:30 pm.
