Box Score

Wake Forest used seven different pitchers in a 7-0 shutout of High Point in non-conference baseball action from Hooks Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Demon Deacons improve to 18-5 overall, while the Panthers drop to 8-19.

High Point starting pitcher Chris Marks (2-3) was charged with the loss. The right-handed hurler allowed only one earned run on four hits, but was victimized by four walks. J. Williams and Mark Shorey led the High Point attack offensively. Williams went 3-for-4 and Shorey went 2-for-4.

Wake Forest starting pitcher Tyler Smith worked the first 3.0 innings. The freshman allowed just one hit, struck out one and walked one. Smith lowered his season earned run average to 1.42. The righty has not allowed a run in his last 12.2 innings of work.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Knox (1-0) picked up his first career victory with 1.0 inning of scoreless relief. Senior Kip Byrum replaced Knox and tossed the next 0.1 inning, but allowed a hit and walk. Sophomore Eric Niesen relieved Byrum with runners on the corners and one out, but retired the next two Panthers to get out of the jam. Niesen followed with a perfect sixth inning, including a pair of strikeouts.

Sophomore Greg Young, junior Sean Souders and junior Josh Ellis pitched the seventh, eighth and ninth inning. Young walked one and allowed one hit. Sounders and Ellis each yielded a hit, but also recorded strikeouts.

Sophomore Austin Jones, freshman Dustin Hood, freshman Evan Ocheltree and redshirt sophomore Eric Williams all had multi-hit games for the Deacons. Jones went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Hood went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Ocheltree went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Freshman Allan Dykstra went 1-for-2 with three walks, a mammoth three-run home run and four RBI. Dykstra is now second on Wake Forest with six home runs and 21 RBI.

The Demon Deacons have now registered three shutouts in 2006 after failing to pitch a single shutout in 2004 or 2005. Wake Forest lowered its team earned run average to 3.64.

High Point returns to action this weekend when they host Big South foe Radford. The first game of the three day series is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
