Baseball Falls In Series Opener at College of Charleston

Box Score

The High Point baseball team saw its two-game win streak halted as the College of Charleston out-slugged the Panthers en route to a 16-4 victory on Friday night at Patriots Point Field in the series opener between the two squads.

HPU slipped to 2-2 on the year with the loss while the Cougars moved to 1-0 with the win in their 2006 opener. Charleston out-hit High Point, 14-5, for the game and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard over the final seven innings of play.

The Cougars got things rolling early in the game scoring four runs in their first at-bat. High Point answered with four runs of its own in the top of the second but a pair of runs in the second and three more in the third put College of Charleston back in front.

After solid work by both teams relief corps, C of C put things out of reach scoring seven runs in the eighth inning to set the final margin.

"Today was a disappointing performance," said HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr. "We struggled in most phases of the game. I feel like we will bounce back and play much better the rest of this series. Hopefully, we can learn from the mistakes we made today and get better."

High Point got one hit each from J. Williams, Chris Norwood, Eric Marion, Ryan Laboy and Alfie Wheeler. Williams and Wheeler drove in runs in the game. Redshirt Tom Boleska (0-2) suffered the loss allowing nine runs on eight hits over five innings of work. True freshman Zach Scott pitched a pair of scoreless innings of relief in his collegiate debut for the Panthers.

Charleston's Joey Friddle, a transfer from South Carolina, collected four hits including a school record-tying three doubles in his debut for the Cougars. Starter Graham Godfrey struck out nine in his CofC debut and picked up the win working six innings and allowing four runs, three earned on just three hits.

High Point and College of Charleston continue their weekend series with game two on Saturday at 1 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
