High Point Tops Radford 76-62 in Men's Hoops Rematch

High Point University freshman Troy Bowen scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Panthers to a 76-62 victory over Radford on Wednesday night at the Millis Athletic Center.

Bowen, who connected on four-of-six three point shots on the night, paced a group of five HPU players to finish in double figures as the Panthers showcased a balanced offensive performance. The victory snapped High Point's (12-7, 5-4 Big South) three-game losing skid to Radford (12-9, 5-4 Big South), halted a two-game home losing streak and also moved the Panthers into a third-place tie with the Highlanders in the Big South Conference standings.

Joining Bowen in double digits for HPU were Issa Konare (13), Akeem Scott (11), Mike Jefferson (10) and Melvin Crowder (10). Sophomore Arizona Reid scored just six points but led the Panthers to a 37-28 edge in rebounding by cleaning the glass for 13 rebounds.

Reggie McIntyre scored 14 points to lead a trio of Radford players in double figures. Chris Oliver finished with 13 points to record his 1,000th career point and Big South leading scorer Whit Holcomb-Faye added 10, 12 points below his season average. Oliver, the league's top rebounder hauled down nine rebounds to pace RU.

After a Dan Ross three-pointer put Radford up by one just a minute into the game, High Point used a 15-4 run to take a 17-6 advantage with 15:44 left in the opening half.  The Highlanders eventually trimmed the deficit to four, 19-15, only to see HPU push back in front by 13 at 32-19 on a layup by Landon Quick at the 8:18 mark.

An 11-0 surge by Radford cut the lead to just two points and a long range trey by Holcomb-Faye at the halftime buzzer completed the comeback giving the Highlanders a 39-37 lead at the break. Both teams played effectively on the offensive end in the opening frame as RU shot 53 percent (14-26) from the floor and HPU connected at a 42.9 percent (15-35) pace.

High Point broke open a tightly contested second period using a 13-2 spurt to turn a two-point deficit into a nine point lead, 54-45, with 14:13 left in the game. Minutes later a three-pointer by Crowder put HPU in front by double digits and the Panthers never looked back. High Point turned up the defensive pressure and never allowed Radford to get closer than seven points over the final 10 minutes of play.

The Panthers shot a blistering 60.9 percent from the floor in the second half and connected on five three-pointers while limiting the Highlanders to just 32 percent shooting including a 1-for-8 performance from beyond the arc. HPU also out-rebounded RU 20-9, led by nine boards by Reid, in the second half.

"This was the best total team performance we've had this year," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy. "We played a very solid defensive game especially in the second half. I thought we did a great job of moving the ball on offense as evidenced by us having five players in double figures. This was an important win for us as we start the second half of Big South play."

The win for High Point was a historic one for the program as the win was the 1,200th in the program's 79-year history. HPU's all-time basketball record is now 1200-870.

High Point next embarks on a stretch that features four of five games on the road including three in a row beginning Saturday at Charleston Southern at 4 p.m.. During the upcoming trio of contests, HPU will also visit Coastal Carolina and Birmingham-Southern.
