Box Score Senior guard Leslie Cook scored 19 of her career high 29 points in the second half to lead the Panthers past Campbell 89-74 on Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C. HPU improves to 5-3 on the season while CU falls to 2-6.
Joining Cook in double figures was junior Amber Manuel with 13 points, Erica Brockmyer added 11 while Ayonna Thompson knocked down 10. Manuel recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
For the Camels Marlena Murphy had a double-double to lead the way with 11 rebounds and a career-high 20 points. Letitia Dickson added 21 points while Octavia Blackwell had 14. Ashley Williamson added 10 to round out the double figure scoring for Campbell.
The Panthers opened the game with a 12-2 run, sparked by back-to-back baskets from Katie Ralls and Cook. High Point would take their biggest lead of the half at the 6:11 mark going up by 11 on a three pointer from Brockmyer. The Camels would rally to pull within three (33-30) off of a pair of made free throw shots from Dickson with just over a minute left in the first period. Jennifer Long would nail a three pointer as the clock was winding down to give the Panthers the 36-30 advantage going into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Panthers got on the board first with lay-up from Candyce Sellars. The Camels wouldn't go away and pulled within four with 12:25 remaining off of a jumper from Blackwell. High Point would go on a 23-10 over the next six minutes (75-58, 6:16), highlighted by a trio of three pointers from Cook. The closest the Camels would come again would be within 11 at 2:27 off a pair of charity points from Williamson. Brockmyer would hit back-to-back treys to seal the Panther victory with a 1:44 left.
"Any road win is a good win," said High Point University head coach Tooey Loy. "Campbell is a very tough place to play we did a great job playing together as a team on both offense and defense. "
HPU and Cu were evenly matched on the boards with 33 each. High Point defense was strong with 12 steals to Campbell's six. High Point shot 49.2-percent from the field while Campbell shot 43.5-percent.
The Panthers will return to action on Monday, Dec. 18 when they play intra-Triad rival UNC Greensboro. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on the campus of UNCG.
