Box Score Junior forward Amber Manuel recorded a double-double to lead High Point over UNC Wilmington, 63-49, tonight in women's basketball action. The Panthers improve to 1-2 while the Seahawks fall to 0-3.
Manuel scored 10 points and pulled down 10 boards to record her first double-double of the season. Senior Candyce Sellars led all HPU scorers with 15 points while Leslie Cook added 12 to round out the double figure scoring for the Panthers.
For the Seahawks Alex Stewart had 16 points to lead all scorers and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sahsha Taylor added 10.
High Point jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to start the game before the Seahawks got on the board with a free-throw from Becca Papach. The Panthers held the lead, pulling ahead by as many as 11 on a lay-up from Caitlin Thys at 8:58. UNCW would rally to go on a 13-2 run to take a one point lead with 3:22 left in the half on a jumper from Stewart. Sophomore Ayonna Thompson would nail a long range three pointer to close the half and give the Panthers the three point advantage (27-24) going into the intermission.
Coming out of the break the Panthers continued their run to take the double digit lead for good at 11:27 (43-31) off of a pair of free throws from Manuel. The Panthers outshot the Seahawks 36-25 in the second half.
"We were really frustrated at halftime," said High Point University head coach Tooey Loy. "But in the second half we came out and really started to execute. We were able to work the ball and get some easy shots."
Defense was strong for the Panthers tonight with 12 steals to UNCW's five, resulting in 20 points off turnovers for HPU compared to UNCW's nine. The Seahawks held the slight advantage on the boards over the Panthers 44-40.
High Point will return to the court on Sunday, Nov. 26 when they host William & Mary. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center.
