Men’s Soccer Shuts Out VMI, 2-0

Chris Archer's two goal performance led the High Point University men's soccer team to the 2-0 shut-out over Big South opponent VMI on Saturday night at Richard F. Vert Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Panthers (2-6-2, 1-1 Big South) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when a cornerkick by Daniel Haywood was on target in the box where Josh Windley was able to flick it over to Archer for the senior's first goal of the night and seventh of the season.

HPU came out strong in the second half but the Keydets' (2-8-0, 0-3-0) defense were able to hold off the Panthers until the 83rd minute when Archer again found the back of the net off of a cornerkick this one from freshman Hilaire Babou.

"This was a very pleasing win," said HPU head coach Peter Broadley. "It's great to see we understand the importance of conference games. Tonight showed that we built on what we learned from the Winthrop game. We still have some things to work on but hopefully this means we're on track going into the rest of the conference schedule."

In goal for the Panthers was Adam Ross in the first half with three saves while Daniel Clark played the keeper position in the second with one save. VMI's John Sollock had four saves.

"Tonight was a good performance of course by Archer, but our offense as a whole looked very good tonight," Broadley said. "Our defense was also very solid tonight."

High Point led in shots with 10 to VMI's five and in shots on goal with six to four.

The Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday at UNC. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
