Box Score

The High Point volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-20) decision to Liberty on Saturday afternoon at the Millis Center in the second match of a Big South weekend doubleheader.

The Panthers never found a consistent flow in the match slipping to 6-15 overall and 4-3 in the Big South following the loss. Liberty improved to 6-13 and 4-3 in the league with the victory.

Junior outside hitter Jamie Kaufman again led High Point posting her second "20-20" performance of the season with 20 kills and 21 digs. Kaufman also hit a team best .217 and shared team honors with two blocks against the flames.

While the lone HPU player to tally double-digit kills, Kaufman was joined by four other Panthers with double figure digs including Audie Gonzalez (18), Lauren Hatch (11), Tara Dyer (10) and Kristina Taylor (10). Taylor added 38 assists to post a double-double in the contest.

Mary Alice Pike and Alysson Sanders both recorded 11 kills to pace the LU offense while libero Lara Bartolomeo finished with 23 digs to pace a quartet of Flame defenders in double-digits. For the match, Liberty owned an 11-4 advantage in team blocks led by five each from Ashley Webber and Autum Black.

"I'm a little disappointed in our performance today," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "We could just never find our rhythm on offense. Liberty did a great job of keeping us off-balance and we got into some holes we just couldn't get out of against them. We just have to refocus and turn our attention to our next match."

Liberty jumped in front 7-1 to start game one as the Panthers struggled to find consistent passing. The Flames maintained a comfortable margin until HPU rallied to trim the deficit to three points at 21-18. LU pushed back ahead with four straight points and then held on for the two-point win. High Point battled off four straight game points before finally falling.

In game two, High Point gained back some momentum earning a 10-7 lead. However, after a timeout by Liberty the Flames outscored the Panthers 17-5 including a seven-point run on Sanders' serve to retake the lead and move on to victory for the 2-0 match lead.

An 8-2 spurt by the Flames busted open a 7-7 tie and then another seven-point run on Sanders' serve minutes later but the game out of reach as Liberty closed out the match with a sweep.

High Point will visit future Big South member Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. on Tuesday before playing a pair of road Big South contests next weekend at Birmingham-Southern (Saturday) and UNC Asheville (Sunday).
