Panthers Race Past Coastal Carolina, 82-62

A quartet of High Point players scored in double figures as the Panthers overcame a halftime deficit by outscoring Coastal Carolina 51-27 in the second half on their way to an impressive 82-62 victory on Monday night at the Millis Center.

High Point improved to 9-4 on the year (2-1 in Big South Conference play) and remained undefeated at home boasting a 5-0 mark. The loss dropped Coastal to 6-7 overall (0-2 Big South) and lowered their season road record to 0-7.

Sophomore Arizona Reid recorded his fifth double-double of the year finishing with a team high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Issa Konare shared team honors with 18 points and also chipped in seven rebounds and a career high six blocked shots. Akeem Scott added 10 points as did freshman Melvin Crowder, for a career high total.

CCU's Jack Leasure led all scorers with 25 points including five three-pointers, but the reigning Big South Freshman of the Year struggled from the floor shooting 8-for-22 including a 5-for-15 performance from beyond the arc and also committed seven turnovers. Moses Sonko tallied 12 points to reach double figures and Pele Paelay had eight rebounds to pace the Chanticleers.

Coastal got things started quickly scoring the first eight points of the game including treys by Paelay and Leasure. Reid snapped the HPU scoring drought with a lay-up at 17:16 in the opening stanza. The Panthers continued to battle eventually grabbing their first lead at 15-14 on a lay-up by Konare with just over 11 minutes remaining. High Point pushed its lead to six (20-14) only to see Coastal race back in front with a 12-0 run to go up 31-24 with 3:39 left. The Chants held a 35-31 edge at the break.

"I thought we played tentative and passive in the first half," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy. "We let them get into a flow and just had to keep fighting to keep things close at halftime. In the second half, we started to make shots and were able to utilize our pressure defense. Our team did a good job of sticking with our game plan and taking care of executing it in the second half. This is a big win and momentum builder for us."

Scott and Justin Dunn dropped in a pair of three-pointers early in the second half to knot the score at 37, then Leasure nailed another trey to put Coastal back up 40-37. A Scott free throw and a lay-up by Landon Quick again tied the score at 40, before the Panthers broke things open over the next five minutes using a 17-3 run to take control of the contest. High Point's lead would swell to as much as 23 points (78-55) with 6:09 left. HPU maintained a comfortable advantage over the closing minutes to earn the double-digit win.

For the game, High Point out-shot Coastal 44 percent to 38 percent from the floor including holding the Big South leading Chants to just 26 percent from the three-point line. CCU, who averaged almost 10 treys per game coming into the contest, were held to just six threes on the night while HPU drained seven from long distance. Coastal did win the battle of the glass, 37-35, but the Panthers forced 25 CCU turnovers turning the miscues into 33 points.

High Point next returns to the road for a pair of games in the state of Virginia beginning on Thursday at VMI at 7 p.m. The Panthers will also play at Radford on Jan. 18 before playing at home against Big South defending champion Winthrop on Jan. 21.
