Box Score Winthrop completed a three-game sweep with an 8-2 win over High Point Monday afternoon in Big South Conference baseball action at Erath Field.
Randy Schwartz had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Panthers (18-29, 6-15 Big South).
Mike Honce (3-2) got the win for the Eagles (35-14, 16-2 league play). Bubba O'Donnell (1-3) took the loss for HPU.
Winthrop was first on the board when Daniel Carte drove an RBI single up the middle to score Mike Konstanty for a 1-0 lead. Kyle Roberson reached on an error by Dustin Holtzman, which allowed Chris Carrara to cross the plate and give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Honce walked Chris Ramirez early in the inning. Randy Schwartz hit a single to drive in Ramirez and put High Point on the board, 7-1.
Schwartz hit his second single in the bottom of the eighth which allowed Ramirez to cross the plate for a second time and bring the Panthers within five, 7-2. But Eagles first baseman tacked on an insurance run in the ninth when Carte hit a single.
HPU and Winthrop each had seven hits in the contest, while the Eagles made three errors to High Point's one.
The Panthers will travel across the county on Wednesday to face UNC Greensboro at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm. High Point will then travel to Lexington, Va. to play its final Conference series of the season against VMI.
